Australia is the land of the Saltwater Crocodile

Until now no one has been able to estimate how many saltwater crocodiles actually inhabit Australia , especially in the coastal areas of the states of Queensland and the Northern Territory, which are close to Indonesia.

But what is clear is that the absence of natural enemies and a very supportive environment makes this saltwater crocodile breed very well and grow into monsters that measure up to more than 5 meters.

These saltwater crocodiles reproduce rapidly so they become a problem when attacking livestock such as cattle and buffalo on farms in the area. In fact, not only livestock, humans are also victims of this saltwater crocodile.
In 2017, a man diving alone about 200m from the north Queensland coast was attacked and preyed on by a saltwater crocodile measuring 4.5m. This crocodile was successfully hunted down and shot by the authorities. This man is a series of casualties and other injured victims resulting from attacks by freshwater crocodiles.

In 2016, a woman who was bathing on the beach was attacked by a crocodile measuring 4.3 m and lost her life. This crocodile was finally caught and euthanized. Another fatal incident occurred in 2009 when a boy was attacked by a crocodile measuring 4.2 meters while playing in the swamp behind his house.

As an illustration, the number of saltwater crocodiles that have been caught and removed from nature due to their ferocity in 2017 alone has reached 16. Whereas in the previous year, it reached 80 (2016), 36 (2015), 62 (2014), 36 (2013) and 9 (2012).

The increasing number of attacks and the appearance of these saltwater crocodiles in areas near settlements have made many parties ask the local government to review the management system of controlling this wild crocodile population.

Australia is indeed listed as one of the countries with the best crocodile population management system in the world. With the existence of six zoning systems for conservation areas , every time there is a sighting of crocodiles in this area, it is clear that steps will be taken including killing, capturing and transferring these crocodiles to licensed crocodile farms or animal gardens.
In Australia, the capture of crocodiles for the use of meat and skins for commercial and export purposes is permitted but is very controlled and can only be carried out by licensed and authorized parties.

For example, let's take a visit to the crocodile farm Malaleuca Crocodile Farm near Mareeba in the Alherton Tablelands  region west of Cairns. We will be able to see 20 wild crocodiles that have been caught being transferred from their natural habitat to this farm along with hundreds of other cultivated crocodiles.
Besides this crocodile farm, there are crocodile farms that accommodate wild crocodile catches that endanger humans and livestock such as the Billabong Sanctuary and Koorana Crocodile Farm near Rockhampton.

Inevitably the explosion in the saltwater crocodile population and the increasing frequency of crocodile attacks on humans poses a problem for Australia. Integrating crocodile conservation in nature with human safety is not an easy thing to do because it often creates conflicts of interest.

But what is clear is that before the entry of Europeans to this continent, Australia has since ancient times been its home to saltwater crocodiles.
