Albuquerque Keen To Defend WEC Title Alongside IMSA Drive The Portuguese has signed up for a full IMSA programme with the Wayne Taylor Racing Acura DPi team, but he is hoping to return to drive for the United Autosports squad with which he won the 2019/20 LMP2 WEC title together with Phil Hanson.  Albuquerque pointed out that there are no date conflicts on the 2021 IMSA and WEC schedules as they stand. 'I would like to continue to do the WEC next year and it does not clash,' he said. 'My main project is the WTR team with Konica Minolta [its primary sponsors] and Acura; my second priority would be the WEC and to win it again if it possible.  'That would be my desire, but we will have to wait and see — in the next two or three weeks we will know more.' United boss Richard Dean described Albuquerque as a 'potential' for what could be an expanded two-car line-up fielded by the British-based team in the 2021 WEC.  The line-up of Albuquerque, Hanson and Paul di Resta, who drove with them in seven of the eight races, will have to be broken up for 2021.  #22 United Autosports Oreca 07 Gibson - Philip Hanson, Filipe Albuquerque, Paul di Resta Photo by: JEP / Motorsport Images Hanson has been upgraded from silver to gold status under the FIA driver grading system and the rules for LMP2 demand a minimum of one driver of silver or bronze status in each car.  'No final decisions have been made, but the intention is for Phil to be back if we can put the right line-up alongside him,' Dean told Motorsport.Com. 'We're looking for the right silver and the intention is that one of the other two [Albuquerque or di Resta] will be with Phil.' Dean didn't rule out either Albuquerque or di Resta driving the team's second Oreca 07 should he be able to put a deal together to expand the team.  'We'd love to figure out a way to keep both of them,' he said. 'We're getting closer to the second car, but at the moment the line-up could come from six, eight or 10 drivers.' United will field a minimum of three cars at the Le Mans 24 Hours centrepiece round of the WEC if it manages to go up to two cars for the full series.  In theory it has four automatic entries for the French endurance classic next year, one for winning the race in 2020, two for finishing first and second in LMP2 in this year's European Le Mans Series and one for claiming the LMP3 class title. 'The plan is to put an entry together for the 24 Hours from our ELMS cars, but if we had two mega line-ups that wanted to go Le Mans, we probably wouldn't turn down the opportunity,' he explained. 'The two teams run independently and use separate cars, so it is doable.' Albuquerque also won the ELMS title with Hanson in 2021, but next year's schedule includes two clashes with IMSA. Another Coach Booted: Flamengo Reflects Brazilian Soccer’s Ills Flamengo's new coach, Spaniard Domenec Torrent (R), gives instructions to footballer Filipe Luis ... (Photo by Mauro PIMENTEL / AFP) (Photo by MAURO PIMENTEL/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images Jorge Jesus’ succes at Flamengo struck a nerve in Brazil. Here was a foreign coach with the image and flamboyance of an old rockstar who didn’t simply conquer the South American continent but introduced a new philosophy that upended some of the conservative coaching dogmas in Brazil. Other Rio clubs took note and in the 2020 season, after the Covid-19 shutdown, they were prepared to take a gamble. Botafogo employed Ramon Diaz, Ricardo Sa coached Vasco Da Gama, and Domenec Torrent succeeded Jesus at Flamengo.  Torrent’s ideas were innovative as well. On debut, against Atletico Mineiro, the Spanish coach decided to “invert the pyramid.” Full-backs Rafinha and Filipe Luis moved to the midfield to complement Willian Arão as Flamengo shaped up in a 2-3-5, an early 20th-century formation and a feature among Pep Guardiola adepts. It was a radical idea to mach five defenders with five attackers. No Brazilian coach would go down that avenue to try and stretch the opposing defense. Still, it was not enough for Flamengo to avert a season-opening 0-1 defeat. In Torrent, the Rio club wanted a successor with the same profile as Jesus; a coach with a modern and progressive idea of how to play soccer. The Spaniard was never the club’s first choice with former Watford coach Marco Silva and ex-Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim among the more illustrious candidates. Of course, Torrent—nickname Dome—had sterling credentials as well: As an assistant, he spent a decade alongside the high priest of the coaches’ guild, Pep Guardiola. His mere association with Guardiola served as a major asset during the hiring process. But the idea that every coach from the Guardiola school will excel by default is a dangerously flawed one. At both Arsenal and Anderlecht, Mikel Arteta and Vincent Kompany have struggled to shape their teams in the image of a typical Guardiola outfit.  Flamengo players protest referee Abdulrahman Al Jassim's decision to award Liverpool an injury-time ... Redeye Agency/Stephen Gormley In Rio, Torrent found the going remarkably tough at his new club. His predicament was multi-faceted: Every win was considered to be still a part of Jesus’ legacy whereas Torrent was singularly held responsible for defeats. Jesus’ 12-month-long victory parade delivered high drama of an extraordinary chromatic intensity. His glorious conquests rapidly became an unmatchable paradigm. The fans and the media demanded wins. They were in a hurry for more silverware, so it was no surprise that Torrent was dismissed at the season’s halfway stage following humiliating defeats at the hands of both Sao Paulo and Atletico Mineiro. Ironically, Jesus nearly didn’t survive his honeymoon period after elimination form the Brazilian cup. But Flamengo, the media and the gigantic nationwide fan base had seen enough of Torrent: “Foraaaa,” they all cried with an unpleasant vengeance. Torrent’s experience lasted less than 100 days, winning 15 times and losing six times in 26 matches. At the time of his sacking, Flamengo was sitting in third in the domestic league table and still in contention in both the Brazilian cup and the Copa Libertadores.  Flamengo’s fortunes were hardly a disaster, but Torrent’s dismissal summarized the tragedy of Brazilian soccer. A coach must win every single game; two or three defeats in a row are enough for the sack. Brazilian soccer and its many stakeholders have the divine right to sack any coach at any time they see fit. They don’t want Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger at their club. They simply want three points, here and now.  Torrent had his obvious flaws, but sacking him was predictable short-sighted. It is the great contradiction of the Jesus era - when Flamengo dominated South American soccer with great aplomb soccer, the idea was reinforced that every game must be won and a coach can always be fired. What should have been a great turning point for Brazilian soccer was interpreted by many in a way that the old dogmas were confirmed. From the north and Fortaleza, Rogerio Ceni, a former goalkeeper with a great spot-kick ability, arrived. He brought a measure of stability to the defending Brazilian champion, but he has not per se improved the team’s game with recurrent weaknesses at the back and a blunt attack. But will it matter in the end? Whatever Ceni wins, whatever kind of soccer Flamengo play, it won’t be enough. Diaz and Sa are gone at the other Rio clubs. In fact, Botafogo, on the brink of relegation, have a turnover of coaches likes never before, even by Brazilian standards.  It is the perennial drama that envelops Brazilian soccer: nothing will ever be enough, and nothing will ever be learned from the past.
