But Georgia flipped blue in November for the first time in nearly three decades, thanks to the tireless work of grassroots organizers, so it’s only right to harness that energy into the runoffs. “It’s like what my grandmother said: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Brown told GEN. “We have an infrastructure in place that has been proven to work.” Ahead, Brown tells us about the challenges of the Senate runoffs, her hopes for a new South, and why organizing work must go beyond electoral politics.

Using my code to decide what videos to watch does seem to have boosted my productivity, as long as I have the discipline not to click on too many ‘follow-on’ links. It’s possible that I miss some interesting videos, but my aim isn’t to comprehensively catch all good videos worth watching (I don’t think that’s possible). We are not having any more children. In large part, due to my realizing that I actually hate motherhood, I think this is the best decision. I would actually go crazy if we had another. Thankfully my husband is on board with this. But I see people getting pregnant and having their second and third kids, and I wonder what I’m doing so wrong and why I hate it so much.

LaTosha Brown is exhausted after the longest election season in recent history, but she has no plans to take a breather. Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats are for grabs, and the runoff elections next month will decide which party controls the chamber. So Brown, co-founder of the organization Black Voters Matter, has been throwing herself into her work in the Peach State. The group has been holding voter registration drives ahead of the December 7 deadline to register, educating people on how to get an absentee ballot, doing socially distanced caravans throughout the state, and planning for a “Let’s Do It Again” bus tour to remind folks that the early voting period starts on December 14.

This was my first time using Lambda and, try as I might, I just couldn’t get all the imported libraries to work at the same time. To execute, the code needed the boto3 email client, OAuth for the API call, Pandas for storing results and many sub-dependencies. Ordinarily, installing these packages is fairly trivial, but on Lambda there were extra challenges. Firstly, there are memory limits for uploads, so I needed to zip the libraries and unzip them after being uploaded. Secondly, it turns out that AWS Lambda uses custom linux which can make it trickier to import the correct, cross-compatible libraries. Thirdly, my Mac was behaving weirdly with its virtual environments.

s are where the real learning is. Come up with a small product you want to build, do some research on the necessary parts to learn, learn them on-demand as you build it up. When you are done, deploy it and try to get some users. Write an article teaching others by explaining the process in detail. It could become more useful than your resume in the future! This is top-down learning, an approach that is most effective in learning anything practical but is usually not adopted by traditional schools.

After putting around 10–15 hours into scouring StackOverFlow, uploading and re-uploading different codebases and consulting several friends, I still couldn’t get it to run. So eventually, much to my frustration, I decided to give up. (if you have any good ideas, let me know!)

LaTosha Brown: In 2016, Cliff Albright and I founded the Black Voters Matter Fund and Black Voters Matter Capacity Building Institute. What we saw was untapped potential to really be able to change the politics of the South. The majority of Black people in this country live in the South. When you write off the South, you write us off.

We wanted to create a power-building organization that would help grassroots groups and Black communities. We focus on getting more resources on the ground to grassroots and frontline groups that are doing work. In this last election cycle, we were able to support more than 600 grassroots groups in 11 states throughout the country. We provided formal grants — anywhere from $5,000 to more than $300,000 — to various groups, depending on their size and their needs. We were also able to support them by mobilizing voters and helping educate folks about the importance and significance of this election. And we were able to connect communities with each other so they could share tools, strategies, and lessons learned.

My perfect workflow would have been to automatically email myself the list of videos every week using Lambda. That way I could pick out the videos from the past I wanted to watch the forthcoming week, and I’d never have to visit the YouTube home page again.

So instead, I settled for a plan B: I manually run the script on my local computer once a week (after an automatic email prompt). To be honest, it’s not the end of the world.

I wanted a way to automatically run this script and had decided to use AWS Lambda (a serverless platform). Lambda lets you write code which lies dormant until it is triggered (e.g. once per week, or based on an event).
