Although Data Science projects can take quite a long time, they usually result in some impact, which of course gives a sense of accomplishment in your everyday work.

This mistake might be one that you make frequently. It’s something I always do — I type than instead of then. I did it when I was typing this article, so it’s something I must make a note to check whenever I see either word in a draft.

In addition to homophones, some words are used interchangeably when they have different meanings. They can trip up the best, most professional writer since either our brains trick us into assuming the words are correct when they aren’t, or we don’t grasp the nuances of their meanings.

I called the exterminator; they’re (contraction) coming tomorrow since their (possessive pronoun) appointments are filled for today. If you’re (contraction) coming for dinner tonight, would you pick up a pizza since I don’t want to cook. Choose your (possessive pronoun) favorite, and I’ll pay.

Alternate as a verb means to go back and forth. My parents alternate holiday dinners between me and my sister. They visit me in even years, and my sister gets them in odd years.

We can’t rely on spell and grammar checkers to find these mistakes since their usage can be tricky. We have to dig into the work to find them when we proofread. While some of these words are used so interchangeably they are moving into common usage, we have an obligation to our readers to use precise language that ensures clarity and truly expresses our ideas.

The more he talked and talked about how much he wanted to have sex with her, the more the girl, my coworkers, and every woman in the cafe felt disgusting and made signals for the girl to realise that it was definitely time to go. As she stood to leave, he decided to follow her out, and both got into their own cars. Neither one of them left the parking lot for 15 minutes, until he decided to accept that he failed and drove away. Minutes later, she went home.

Possessive pronouns and pronoun contractions are easily mistaken and overlooked. This can happen because the rule for forming possessive pronouns differs from how we form possessive nouns. Possessive nouns are formed by adding an apostrophe; however, possessive pronouns have no apostrophe. It’s one of the quirkier rules of the English language.

Compliment is used both as a verb and a noun. As a verb, it means to praise. As a noun, it’s the expression of praise. The conference organizer gave me a high compliment when she took time to compliment my presentation.

Writing is a process that starts with planning and ends with proofreading, which, for some of us, is the most challenging step. It’s hard to proofread our own work because by the time we get to this step, we have edited and revised the piece multiple times. We are so familiar with it that we no longer can see mistakes. The solution is to let the final revision get cold, so we see it with fresh eyes. Even then, some types of errors can still slip by us. The common culprits are homophones — sneaky words that sound the same, but have different meanings and may have different spellings.

Lastly, is the ability to not only grow considerably at your company, in terms of level or position in role, but also the ability to grow as a person. Sometimes roles can become quite stagnant, but in Data Science there are several different sub-positions that you can move to.

At most of the companies I have worked at, the Data Science team is sectioned off and is sometimes separate from Engineering and Product (the two main departments that a Data Scientist can expect to work with or be apart of). Because the role of Data Science is not just Engineering or not just Product, you find yourself working somewhat alone. To me, this outcome is a pro. When you or even a smaller team are apart of a tightly-knit group, you can focus on a few projects rather than, say, up to 10, like a Software Engineer might experience or a Product Manager. The benefit of freedom in your role is certainly a nice-to-have. You might have fewer meetings, more time to focus on your project, and have the ability to work with a smaller amount of people who know about your project and can collaborate on.

Because the role of Data Scientist covers so many facets of engineering and product like software, coding, programming, product management, business analytic, and business intelligence, you can find your niche and work towards a more specialized role (or stay a generalist and conquer them all).

Even though these words aren’t pure homophones when they’re pronounced correctly, people often confuse them. Sometimes, it’s due to a simple typing mistake; sometimes, it’s not knowing the rules.

In terms of growing as a person, Data Science requires critical thinking, working alone, but also working with stakeholders and higher-level executives that require communication and reasoning skills — all of which can be applied to outside of Data Science.
