If Youre an Immigrant and You Dont Keep these Vices in Check, Youll Hate Yourself Later

The experience of leaving your native country and immigrating to another one is an exciting one. Unfortunately, however, there are a number of "immigration vices" that have resulted in the downfall of many people who arrive on foreign shores in search of greener pastures. Keep the vices below in check, and you guarantee your place ahead of the pack:

1)Alcohol

If you can avoid drinking all together, you put yourself head and shoulders above your peers. This is because alcohol, more often than not, impairs or completely eliminates ones judgement. From this place, many immigrants have engaged in behaviour that has prematurely terminated their stay abroad or even resulted in criminal charges. This behaviour includes:

  1. Driving and being involved in car accidents while under the influence.
  2. University students missing important classes and exams.
  3. Various forms of assault including fighting.

Should you decide that you will in fact consume the occasional beer or spirit, make sure you keep your wits about you at all times. They are the line between you and deportation.

2) Drugs

All the problems that alcohol can bring into your life also apply to illicit, hard drug use. However, they also combine with a number of serious problems resulting in a definite no-no for the ambitious immigrant. Remember:

  1. Most 'hard drugs' are much more addictive than alcohol.
  2. Most drug habits cost much more than drinking habits, especially for an addict.
  3. Most 'hard drugs' are illegal.

Don't come near drugs with an 800,000 foot pole. You will regret it if you do.

3) Lack of focus

Two statements can be taken as indications of impending doom:

"We'll wait and see.." and/or:
"I don't know what I want to do."

The problem with the above statements is that the Western world is RUN by people with very strong agendas. This includes:

  1. The media
  2. Corporations
  3. Local and national governments
  4. Universities
  5. Cults and;
  6. Various niches and sub-niches of society.

If you have no idea what you want to do with your life, trust me, one of the above groups is just waiting to peddle you their version of truth.

Even if your life plan changes with time, make sure you come here with one. Remember to fail to plan is to plan to fail.

4) Getting Stuck in a Rut

Wherever you are in life, there are other people there. Those people can give you justifications and reasons why being there is the greatest place to be.

Don't disappoint yourself. If you know you want more than the current rut you are living in, get your focus back and keep striving until you reach the goals that brought you overseas in the first place.

5) Relationships and Sex

Just like alcohol and drugs, relationships and sex result in the impairment of judgment. Granted, that a lot of the time this impairment is desired and feels fantastic, it still is a subversion of your ability to logically reason and think. For that reason, be very careful who you are willing to open your heart to and share your body with.

Sadly, there are a number of people who are just out to use you to either satisfy their carnal desires, resolve their insolvency and legal issues or a host of other selfish ends, and then dump you when they are done with you.

Seek out long lasting relationships that are founded on friendship, trust and love and try to learn from them the principles that make their relationships work.

In addition to that, find out the type of person you have to become in relationships, and the type of people you have to attract to have rock-solid, long-lasting relationships.
