Improving cross-functional team collaboration and engagement form

The past year, unsettling and transformational in so many aspects, saw teams across the industries transitioning temporarily and permanently to fully remote operations and processes. Having experienced the struggle of keeping together the deteriorating communication and stakeholder alignment, I dedicated a good portion of 2020 to improving the multi-disciplinary team’s collaboration and focusing on engagement throughout the project life cycle.

While researching successful and applicable project- and collaboration management concepts, the IBM’s Enterprise Design Thinking framework stood out with their emphasis on team alignment while pursuing positive user outcomes. Specifically, their approach to outlining “hills” (written statements that communicate intent for a project, i.e. frame problems as intended user outcomes, not predetermined implementations, which allows for a flexible and creative ideation) and conducting “playbacks” (a practice of consistently bringing stakeholders into the loop to reflect on a project together and measure progress against the big picture problem that needs to be solved) is what caught my attention and interest.
The core idea of Hills is that they “tell you where to go, not how to get there”. To write a successful Hill you simply need to specify the user, add the outcome you want them to achieve and outline the “wow”, or what will differentiate you from competitors. Here’s a simple example: It should take no more than 3 seconds for a customer to load any Altus website globally on any given device. O
