Speech does not only vary by accent, but also by emotional and physical state. When a condition makes someone unintelligible, it is feasible not only to improve intelligibility but to identify what is wrong, perhaps categorising emergency calls, where the speaker is affected by stroke, sedation, drunkenness, concussion, or merely identify that the caller is a child, or speaks a particular language.

nter on Hacker News pointed out, Tesla uses Google Maps for its dashboard. They only use OpenStreetMap for the auto-summon feature, which incidentally has resulted in lots of parking lots being added to OSM by the Teslarati as covered in Jennings’ most recent SOTMUS talk!

Self-destructive people feel like they can’t let anyone in. You’re afraid you’ll be caught out, so you paper yourself in a manic cheerfulness that lets you show everyone else how totally OK you are.

It’s also likely that you have been successful in fooling the people closest to you. They’ll take your energy at face value, which can mean that you’ll feel like they don’t really see the real (and slowly imploding) you.

Finally, early identification of certain serious long-term neurological conditions is possible by monitoring subtle changes to speech. This can be done without hospital visits or even without targeting those who are at risk. Conveniently for all concerned, we all speak into our phones and computers all the time, so it would only be necessary to opt in, and give permission for your voice to be analysed, without compromising confidentiality by being recorded or listened to.

The “this” is one of the most confusing things about Javascript and with ES2020 we got “globalThis” which definitely helps to streamline things and set a clear distinction between the other “this”.

The “this” can refer to the instance of an object or class. It also changes depending on how a function is called. It is the context where you are and also changes when you are in strict vs non-strict mode. Need more reason to truly try to master it?

Of course, there’s an energy cost to pretending to be wildly upbeat all the time, as Samantha Dewitt writes in Better Help. “…[P]retending to be happy is only sapping even more of your energy and making you feel even more upset.” If you come off conference calls, evenings with friends, or even dinner with your family and you find you’re utterly and completely drained, this might be a sign that you’re relying on this self-destructive habit.

What I mean is that you’re scared of deep emotion. And so instead of reacting to things in a consistent way, you shove emotions down. Not just bad ones, like sadness or anxiety, but even happy ones, like joy or excitement. You use your own coping mechanisms — which can be alcohol, but also TV shows, social media, obsessions with exercise — to repress them. You feel like you don’t deserve the happy ones or like they may be taken away at any moment, and you can’t deal with the unhappy ones.

The best way to stop doing this is to respond to those feelings as they come. “Journals are like a checkpoint between your emotions and the world,” writes clinical psychologist Beth Jacobs, Ph.D, in her book Writing for Emotional Balance. Try using a journal to write the feelings down as they occur, and pinpoint what caused them, as well as any thoughts you may have about the feelings. It’s OK if it takes time to get used to this — this particular self-destructive habit is one many of us have spent years cultivating.

Nowadays, the latest developments are routinely shared, and the whole industry takes the latest ideas from Google, NVIDIA, Microsoft and a global community of university researchers, and with their blessing, extends them and applies them in new contexts, adding expertise from their own niche professions.

The result is that your thoughts can feel stunted because you’re constantly cutting yourself off before you feel too much. You’re easily overwhelmed by uncontrollable waves of emotion when they do come because you’re not used to them.

Class and Array are two examples of things that are just objects under the hood. To understand Objects you need to understand the prototype nature of Javascript including prototypical inheritance and prototypes.

I have spent a lot of time working on systems which analyse accents, mispronunciations and speech impediments. Some people are difficult to understand because they have an unfamiliar accent, or are only just learning a language. We can make it easier to master pronunciation by giving them real-time feedback, but maybe we needn’t bother: morphing accents, and correcting errors in real time are both becoming a reality.
