Cakewalk is a word very commonly used to describe a task that is extremely easy to perform. However, this word has a dark and completely antithetical connotation. The ‘cakewalk’ was the name of a pre-Civil War dance originally performed by slave-people on the plantations. The dance was often adjudicated by the owners who would be mocking the subaltern communities as they performed the task in chains. The winner of the contest was given a cake and hence the name. Strange enough, in certain instances, the dance was also performed during the auctions of the slave-people where it was used to indicate their ‘value’ to the bidders. The word alludes to some of the darkest times for the African-American communities and calling their ordeal ‘easy’ is extremely insensitive. Through macabre transmutations, the word has survived in our dictionaries and it is high time that we eliminate it altogether.

The day The Little BOHO Bookshop opened in Bayonne, New Jersey, owner Sandra Dear got a note in her mailbox: “Get out, we do not want your kind here.” For three years, the threats continued, including one from a caller who said he wanted to burn the bookstore down with Dear, a Black woman, inside. Last week, after receiving a pair of emails and a death-threat phone call, Dear alerted the authorities. The next day they arrested a man, Qiuewn Zheng, who approached the store mumbling the same phrases from the emails. Yeah, so you know how we usually find some way to crack jokes about the many ridiculous ways racism pops up every day in our society? That’s not happening this time, friends. Independent bookstores are some of the most important small businesses we have; if you live anywhere near Bayonne, give Dear’s shop your business (or just order online!). Maybe you can get Zheng a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go! — because we have a feeling we know exactly where he’s headed. (Daily Voice)

This term is a drastic oversimplification which the medieval European navigators used for huge swathes of different Native American nations living in the Arctic regions. Under this umbrella-term, the distinct identity of the people was fused together into an arbitrary collective noun. Linguists believe that the word came from the French word ‘esquimaux,’ referring to one who nets snowshoes. The Alaska natives have petitioned for the use of ‘Inuit’ over Eskimo to refer to them. Over the years, our media is fraught with a plethora of references that perpetuate this misnomer. Getting rid of this slur from our language allows for a more culturally inclusive discourse.

mple example. I once hired a UX designer for a specific mobile redesign effort. During the first week of the project, the scope changed and I needed support to document requirements, not design. The designer we had just hired didn’t have much experience in gathering functional requirements or managing them. So, what did she do? She rolled up her sleeves and read articles, talked to business analysts, and figured out the basics on her own. She didn’t complain. She dug in and figured it out. This type of attitude will set you apart from everyone else.

Full disclosure: We have no idea what kind of a college Ferris State University in Michigan is. We didn’t go there, we don’t know anyone who went there, and we’re sure its doctoral program in pharmacy has enriched more than a few CVS locations in the Mitten State. But if the case of astronomy professor Thomas Brennan is any indication, we’re not gonna be pressing our kids to go there. See, once Covid-19 emerged as a global pandemic, Brennan decided to let all his crazy out, both in the classroom and on Twitter. Not only did he decry the disease as a “stunt” to instill a “leftist new world order” and imply that it was caused by smartphones and trot out the old Jewish-conspiracy standby, but he also referred to Neil DeGrasse Tyson as a “worthless n****r.” (He used the same slur to describe both Bill Nye and the astronaut Buzz Aldrin, which is somehow both hateful and absolutely hilarious.) After learning of the tweets last week, Ferris State placed Brennan on administrative leave, a weird, not-quite-fired limbo from which he’s complaining about being “unfairly portrayed as a racist and anti-Semite.” Can’t a poor guy who doesn’t believe in the moon landing or viruses catch a break? Coming out of medical school to be a doctor isn’t easy: You spend at least three years working as a “resident,” getting on-the-job training with supervision. And that stress is only compounded by patients’ bigoted attitudes. According to researchers who published the results of their online survey this week, 45% of Black and Latinx residents had heard racial epithets from patients or had patients refuse to accept care from them. It gets worse: 87% of the female respondents said they had experienced sexual harassment on the job, and every single Asian respondent said a patient had asked them what country they were from. Very cool! While the survey only focused on university-affiliated medical centers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Durham, North Carolina, we’re gonna go out on a limb and guess that these aren’t exactly isolated phenomena. Keep it up, sick Americans: Nothing shows appreciation to health care providers quite like racism! (MedPage Today)

However, small signs such as how close to us they sit, how much they remember about us, how much they keep a conversation going, the way they smile, nervousness, curiosity, and the amount of time they spend with us, can help us understand if someone is into us or not.

After they met, he started to join us twice a week — to talk with her almost all the time. And we were right. He was clearly head over heels for her. Fast forward to today, they live together and are waiting for a baby.

A person interested in you may show these signs or at least a few of them. However, if they don’t make a move and you’re still wondering whether they like you or not, the best thing you can do is to take the first step yourself and ask them. Life is too short to waste time overthinking.

The largest room in a house is called the master bedroom. However, the phrase is loaded with heavy colonial baggage. Though its origins are contested, the phrase most likely emerged from Dutch architecture in the 20th-century colonies. Inside the large colonial estates, a feudal hierarchy was maintained to run the affairs. Different roles were maintained with a strong sense of segregation, with only the upper echelons of staff allowed access to certain parts of the house. Furthermore, the terminology leaves independent women out of homeownership by not having room for a ‘mistress bedroom’. The ‘master bedroom’ represented a beacon of exclusion because it disbarred entry to people of color. Somehow, this sort of class-based pejorative stuck in our vocabulary and continues to feature in our written work, even the most prized novels of our times, include such a classification in their descriptions. In fact, recently, as an aftermath of the BLM protests, the National Association of Home Builders has opted to replace the phrase with ‘primary bedroom.’

An example of this is Bob, a friend of mine, who liked Giulia, a girl who used to hang out with our group of friends. We all understood he was into her. Before meeting Giulia, Bob wasn’t hanging out with us a lot. He probably came once a week or every two weeks.

The expression is used to imply an examination of the basic facts of the situation. It originated to refer to the bottom portions of the ships used to transit the enslaved people across the Atlantic. Some scholars believe that the term was also used as a euphemism for the N-word at the beginning of the previous centuries. Recently, Sky Sports has banned the use of this word by its commentators in order to maintain political correctness. As global citizens, we should be cognizant of the slanderous history behind this phrase and steer clear of it.

Political correctness has been one of the biggest learnings of this year. Amid a worldwide outbreak, voices from all over the world rallied against the age-old contagions that have been plaguing humanity. On this uphill climb to social justice, we have uncovered an underlying structure of discrimination that lurks beneath our milieu. As our language has been shaped alongside a predominantly racist climate, it has absorbed some of the recollections from that period. On our journey to free our system of its prejudice, we must also purge our lexicons of the scars of the past which stoke buried hatred. Here are some phrases that you should immediately remove from your usage.
