A Business Analyst measures all parts of the business to ensure maintenance and growth is occurring in the company. You can expect to create, develop, or maintain important metrics, also known as KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators). You will quantify the business so that important decisions can be made about a sales process or a product improvement for example. You will investigate both internal and external parts of the business and therefore find anomalies in a process that will ultimately help to make the company more efficient and successful. There are certain tools you will employ like SQL, visualization tools like Tableau, and you will present findings to stakeholders. This role is customer-facing centered, even if the ‘customer’ is internal.

It may have seen that we have just described a Data Analyst above. But, there are some more differences within the Data Analytics role, as well as some of the skills and goals that are focused on in this position. A Data Analyst can expect to focus more on the data of the company more than that on the impact of that data. They ultimately will perform both, but the focus will be less on presenting to stakeholders, and more so on the data warehousing, data tables, and SQL code developed to create those business metrics.

Mistakes are a part of life. Don’t be afraid to make them, be afraid to not make them. Hiding from them will keep you from realizing your greatest successes. It’s important to understand that a life well-lived is going to be littered with errors — personal, professional, etc. Our job is not to run away from them but to understand why they happened.
