University of Maine head men’s ice hockey coach Red Gendron died Friday after experiencing a medical emergency while playing golf at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Jeff Susdorf, the general manager of the PVCC, said Gendron was playing with a “younger gentleman” but didn’t have the name of his playing partner.

He had just completed his eighth season as the head coach at UMaine.

Paul Culina, athletic trainer for the hockey team and the director of hockey operations, said Gendron seemed fine earlier in the day when the team met to hand out academic awards. He also pointed out that Gendon had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

He was unaware of any health problems, saying Gendron would have kept any health issues to himself.

University of Maine student Patrick Silva who works for The Maine Campus student newspaper, was preparing to play a round of golf Friday at PVCC. He recounted his experience on his Twitter feed.

“I was on the first tee box this afternoon at Penobscot Country Club just outside of Orono right as I was about to hit my ball I heard someone yell “does anyone know CPR”. Shortly after cop cars and an ambulance arrived. Red Gendron had passed away 2 holes in front of me. RIP.”

The Berlin, New Hampshire, native had a long and impressive 34-year coaching career that included stints in the college ranks and in the National Hockey League.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by Red’s sudden death,” UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy said. “He was a force in UMaine Athletics and in the legacy of our men’s ice hockey program. We mourn his passing and remember his many contributions to the generations of players he mentored and to the program that lit up Black Bear Nation and the state of Maine. Our thoughts are with his wife Janet, and daughters Katelyn and Allison, his coaching staff and players. They have our support and respect for their privacy during this difficult time.”

Gendron’s most recent contract with UMaine was set to expire on June 30. UMaine Director of Athletics Ken Ralph had commented that Gendron and the coaching staff were working toward next season and that the department was looking for ways to improve its financial support of the program.

“Words cannot express our deep sadness from the tragic, sudden loss of Red Gendron,” Ralph said. “Our community and the entire UMaine Athletics family mourn the loss of Coach Gendron and we ask you all to keep him, his family, his friends, and our hockey staff and student-athletes in your thoughts through this agonizing time.”

The University of Maine has been informed that men’s ice hockey head coach Red Gendron experienced a medical condition this afternoon and passed away. He was 63.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by Red’s sudden death,” says UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy. “He was a force in UMaine Athletics and in the legacy of our men’s ice hockey program. We mourn his passing and remember his many contributions to the generations of players he mentored and to the program that lit up Black Bear Nation and the state of Maine. He has guided eight USA Hockey Teams, including the U.S. National Junior Team on three occasions. USA Hockey uses Gendron’s book, “Coaching Hockey Successfully,” as the advanced-level manual for its coaching education program. At Bellows Free Academy in Vermont, he guided squads to four state championships in the 1980s.

Gendron spent 11 seasons in professional hockey with the New Jersey Devils organization. Gendron earned three NHL championship rings as a coach and has twice had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup. He was an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils when they captured the Stanley Cup in 1995, and was an assistant and head coach, respectively, with their AHL team in Albany when the Devils won the Stanley Cup in 2000 and 2003.

Before being named the head coach of the Black Bears, Gendron was associate head coach at Yale University; the Bulldogs won the 2013 NCAA Division I National Championship. Prior to Gendron’s two seasons at Yale, from 2005-11, he was an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts.

A native of Boston, Gendron had been at the helm of the Black Bears since 2013.

Gendron previously served as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils under Jacques Lemaire and won the 1995 Stanley Cup. He would go on to win two more Stanley Cups as a member of the organization in 2000 and 2003.

He also won a NCAA Championship as an assistant coach with Maine in 1993, with Hockey Hall of Famer Paul Kariya among his players, and another as the associate coach of Yale in 2013.

Gendron's coaching career also took him to the American Hockey League with the Devils' affiliate Albany River Rats and the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League.

Internationally, Gendron was an assistant coach on three different United States entries at the World Junior Hockey Championship in 1993, 2001 and 2002.

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider. The verb to stream refers to the process of delivering or obtaining media in this manner.[clarification needed] Streaming refers to the delivery method of the medium, rather than the medium itself. Distinguishing delivery method from the media distributed applies specifically to telecommunications networks, as most of the delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television, streaming apps) or inherently non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, audio CDs). There are challenges with streaming content on the Internet. For example, users whose Internet connection lacks sufficient bandwidth may experience stops, lags, or slow buffering of the content. And users lacking compatible hardware or software systems may be unable to stream certain content.
Live streaming is the delivery of Internet content in real-time much as live television broadcasts content over the airwaves via a television signal. Live internet streaming requires a form of source media (e.g. a video camera, an audio interface, screen capture software), an encoder to digitize the content, a media publisher, and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content. Live streaming does not need to be recorded at the origination point, although it frequently is.
Streaming is an alternative to file downloading, a process in which the end-user obtains the entire file for the content before watching or listening to it. Through streaming, an end-user can use their media player to start playing digital video or digital audio content before the entire file has been transmitted. The term “streaming media” can apply to media other than video and audio, such as live closed captioning, ticker tape, and real-time text, which are all considered “streaming text”.
