Magufulis Health Condition Decreased, Tanzanians need to be informed

An opposition leader in Tanzania on Tuesday asked the government to tell the public about the health of President John Magufuli, who could not be seen in public for more than two weeks, saying citizens had a right to know about his condition.

There has been widespread speculation in East Africa that Magufuli, 61, a vocal skeptic of COVID-19, is sick with the coronavirus, although his vice president said on Monday that Tanzania is safe and citizens should ignore rumors from outside the country.

“It is important for the government to inform the public about the president’s state of health to reduce the continuing fear,” said ACT-Wazalendo party leader Zitto Kabwe.

"The president's state of health is not supposed to be a secret," he said.

According to Kabwe, Tanzania’s constitution calls on the Speaker of Parliament to disclose information about the President’s state of health. He recalled that the Tanzanians received regular updates on the state of health of two former presidents, Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete, when they were abroad for medical treatment.

"The public was not informed whether the president was performing his duties and whether the vice president had taken over the president's duties," Kabwe later told Reuters by telephone.

Government spokesman Hassan Abbasi did not send calls and messages asking for comments.

Magufuli mocked the global panic over the COVID-19 epidemic and curbed the threat of the virus in Tanzania. He reported the COVID-19 tests, rejected vaccinations and opposed wearing the mask, instead urging his people to believe in prayer and try agents like inhaling steam.

Justice and Constitutional Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said Monday that anyone who "spreads, disseminates false information" is breaking the law and could be arrested.

Another opposition politician, Tundu Lissu, who lost the election last year because of Magufuli, said out of exile in Belgium last week that the president is under medical treatment in India for the virus and is in serious condition.

Indian immigration service records do not show anyone named John Magufuli entering the country, and air ambulance flight records have not shown a flight from East Africa since Feb. 1, an Indian government source told Reuters on Tuesday.

Kabwe, the leader of the opposition, called on the government to release people arrested for questioning the president’s health. Police have arrested four people in the country since last week who allegedly disseminated false information about the illness of political leaders, police say, who did not mention the president’s name citing the arrests.
