Well, that’s a boring story. Character driven novels should force the character into the world you’ve built. Make them do something. They need to interact with the world and be immersed in activities that will help shape them.

The End… the elusive finish to your book. You might have an idea, but maybe you don’t. You might have a plan but it feels like you’re forcing your characters to follow a set path to the right when they really want to go left. Maybe to get there you have to force a character to do things they wouldn’t normally do.

The most likely scenario is that object-oriented programming will stay around for another decade or so. Sure, the avant-garde is functional, but that doesn’t mean you should ditch object-oriented yet. It’s still incredibly good to have in your repertoire.

How does that happen? Realistic characters that have flaws and display unique personalities. Readers want to see themselves in the character. They want to imagine they are going through the same challenges and finding their own inner strength. They see someone they love and they want to root for the character that displays similar characteristics and emotions.

There comes a point where your characters might have a better grasp on their own story than you do. Here are some ways to help you write character driven stories, or better yet, hand over the reigns of writing to your characters and give them power over where things will end up.

More and more problems are coming up where functional programming is often the more efficient option. Think data analysis, machine learning, and parallel programming. The more you get into those fields, the more you’ll love functional programming.

you: Take a long look in the mirror. Take stock of where you are in life and where you want to be. Can you honestly say your life is working out exactly as you’ve planned? If you see women you’ve hurt in your rearview mirror and a life that’s a bit more empty than you’d like it to be, it might be time to reassess your lifestyle and priorities. And grow the hell up.

At the end of the day, the — admittedly rather heated — debate of functional versus object-oriented programming boils down to this: could we be reaching the end of the era of object-oriented programming?

It makes sense to get informed about new programming paradigms and use them when appropriate. If object-oriented programming is the hammer that makes developers see nails wherever they go, is that a reason to throw the hammer out the window? No. You add a screwdriver to your toolbox, and maybe a knife or a pair of scissors, and you choose your tool based on the problem at hand.

But if you look at the status quo, there are a dozen offers for object-oriented programmers to one offer for functional coders. That doesn’t mean you won’t get a job if you prefer the latter; functional developers are still pretty scarce these days.

But characters make us feel. They give us someone to root for (or against). They develop and interact with the plot, molding themselves as they follow the yellow brick road of story direction.

Readers don’t want flawless characters. They would pass through the story without any issues, fighting the bad guy and prevailing on the first try. No, readers want to connect with the characters and become emotionally invested.

Characters have to interact with the plot, otherwise we’d just have awesome people doing normal stuff. There’d be no conflict, nothing to develop the character. That’s why we throw in plot, obstacles, and consequences to action. Those things help mold the character into who they will be at the end.

Functional and object-oriented programmers alike, stop treating your paradigms like a religion. They’re tools, and they all have their use somewhere. What you use should only depend on what problems you are solving.
