Mickelson retains lead at Northern Trust Open

Phil Mickelson continued his recent run of good form at the Northern Trust Open in California on Friday shooting a one-under par round of 70 to lead by one at the halfway stage.

The 41-year-old opened his second round where he left off on Thursday with a birdie at the first hole but experienced more mixed fortunes for the remainder of the day.

An eagle at the par-four eighth, where Mickelson holed his approach shot, was bookended with bogies at seven and nine and a birdie two at the par-three 16th was then cancelled out by a bogey five at the last.

Resurgent Mickelson sets early pace at windy Riviera

'I probably didn't play the greatest today, but I was able to kind of salvage a good round and had a good break on eight where I holed out from the fairway; that was a nice little bonus,' Mickelson said, PGATour.com reported.

'I put myself in contention heading into the weekend, which is what my initial goal was. And so with 36 holes to go, I'm right in the thick of it. I've got to go out and shoot some low scores, because they're out there,' he added, PGATour.com reported.

Mickelson's nearest challenger is American Pat Perez who carded a six-under par 65 to jump 34 places up the leaderboard to claim second place on his own.

Australian Jarrod Lyle also shot a 65 to leave him in tied for third on four-under along with Sweden's Carl Petterson and Americans Jimmy Walker (66), Matt Kuchar (69) and Jonathan Byrd (70).

Bubba Watson, Spencer Levin and Australia's Marc Leishman are a shot further back on three-under par.

Ten players, including England's Justin Rose, South Korea's K.J. Choi and America's J.B. Holmes are currently tied for 11th on two under.

Holmes, who is appearing in only his fourth PGA Tour event since having brain surgery in September, shot a two-over par 73.

World number one Luke Donald is on level par after posting a one-over par round of 72.

Meanwhile at the Avantha Masters in India, South Africa's Jbe Kruger will take a shot lead into Sunday's final round.

Two eagles and two birdies helped the 25-year-old to a third round 66 to finish on 11-under par.

Halfway leader Peter Whiteford, Germany's Marcel Siem and France's Jean Baptiste Gonnet are all one shot back with six players currently tied for fifth place, including Paul McGinley and Spain's Jose Manuel Lara who shot a third round 64.

Kruger is looking to clinch his maiden European Tour victory but isn't getting ahead of himself.

'I'm going to try to play how I played today. If it's meant to be my week, it'll be mine, so I don't want to think too far ahead yet,' Kruger said, EuropeanTour.com reported.

'The putts need to go in and I think that's what defines the winner...My putting has been good and if I can see the line, I'm confident my putts will go in. I'm improving and I'm a lot more experienced, and I think that will give me the edge,' he added, EuropeanTour.com reported.
