I had epilepsy and anxiety, and I could still manage to be in normal classes. I was proud of my suffering, of how hard I worked to be considered “normal.” I thought it meant that I was stronger than they were.

The cynical in our society answer with the first or the second. Truth is irrelevant. This goes further than saying the world is what it is. It says it doesn’t matter what the world is. And surely that just adds to the lie.

I would put off doing homework until the last minute, and then the panic would fuel me to get stuff done. I had to drag myself through every day, and distract myself to help decompress. I didn’t like being around people. I felt foggy. I couldn’t plan. I had no ambitions — I didn’t really want to do anything except be left alone.

But I ended up needing that time anyway. Even after cramming my way through college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I didn’t learn how to advocate for myself. I had gotten through school like it was an annoying chore.

I didn’t really believe in #7 when I was a child. I was struggling to appear and seem normal, and that was sucking out all of my energy — energy I could have been using to develop skills I enjoyed, focusing on the future I really wanted, and defining my own version of happiness.

In each case, the unreality of life presented was intended as an allegory. In the case of the Matrix, its authors later explained that it was an allegory to living a life as a transgendered person. In the case of Plato, it was living a life as a philosopher. In both cases, the authors felt that they were, in some sense, living a false life in order to adhere to social norms. (Philosophizing was actually pretty dangerous in Plato’s time with Socrates a notable victim.)

Social norms are hardly the only source of that feeling that life is fake. Language itself is filled with half-truths, convenient generalizations that help us to delineate the world while at the same time avoid its chaos of unique circumstances. Literate cultures such as ours find this magnified by the written word which gives language persistence and generalization. Indeed, anthropologists have shown that people from literate cultures can better understand syllogisms than those from illiterate cultures where logical statements like “for all” and “there exists” are difficult to comprehend amidst the ever changing perceptions of a life lived without a persistent method of information storage beyond memorization.

The Matrix movies have made an incredible impact on how people think about the idea of living in a simulacrum of life. And the idea that we are not living a life that is “real” goes all the way back to at least Plato and his allegory of the cave.

Looking back, I understand their concerns. They were worried that if I was treated any differently, I would be at a huge disadvantage when it came to my education and success.

I like jobs where I can work remotely, and I hate having people breathing down my neck. Being micromanaged triggers my anxiety and makes me paranoid, whereas I’m way more productive just being given a task and told to do it.

The constant stream of biased news reports in our own society shows that, despite greater access to evidence than ever before, what is said and what is perceived are growing further apart than ever.

I’ve spent many years understanding that schools do more than teach, and requiring help based on your particular needs does not make you weak. I am not a cookie-cutter person…nobody is. We all need to do our best to address our own needs instead of deny them.

et together they often gauge a partner’s intentions by the way they talk about the future: should we do something for Christmas? Let’s plan a trip together? Making plans together demonstrates your investment. Of course, keeping those plans shows you meant it.

Even though I had epilepsy and mental health issues, I didn’t want to admit that those things made me different. I was all about forcing myself to be a part of a world that didn’t quite work for me, and hiding the fact that I was struggling so hard.
