NEWSS First travellers arrive in UK for hotel quarantine stay

Police in the Republic of Ireland are searching for two people who absconded from a mandatory quarantine hotel in north Dublin on Saturday.

RTÉ News reports that a third person who left the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry has since been found.

People arriving into the Republic from a list of 33 'high-risk' countries, or who land without a negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test must undergo 14 days quarantine.

The rules took effect on Friday.

Non-compliance can result in a €2,000 (£1,700) fine or up to one month in prison.

The cost of the hotel stay, which has to be pre-booked, starts from €1,875 (£1,593).

The Irish Defence Forces are responsible for overseeing the scheme and escorting buses from Dublin Airport to the hotel.

On Thursday, Northern Ireland announced plans for "managed isolation".

Mandatory hotel quarantine is now in place for all travellers arriving into the Republic of Ireland from 33 countries deemed "high risk" for Covid-19 transmission.

Passengers must book and pay for a 12-night stay from a selection of dedicated hotels across the country.

The time could be reduced if someone receives a negative Covid-19 test on day 10 of quarantine.

On Thursday, Northern Ireland announced plans for "managed isolation".

It comes as NI prepares to reopen some travel routes and would mean offering hotel accommodation for people who need to self-isolate on arrival.

In the Republic of Ireland, quarantine was made mandatory at 04:00 local time on Friday, with pre-booking necessary.

The Tifco Hotel Group will be responsible for transporting passengers from their arrival point to the quarantine hotels.

While it will also be responsible for providing security, the Irish Defence Forces will oversee the process and escort the buses to the hotels.

The cost of a 12-night stay is €1,875 (£1,614) for one person, €625 (£535) for another adult (or child aged over 12) sharing the room, €360 (£308) for a child aged 4 to 12, with no charge for infants.

Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to €2,000 (£1,700) or a month in prison.

Which countries are high risk?
The new rules affect any passenger who was in one of the designated "high-risk" countries in the past 14 days, including those getting a connecting flight.

It also affects people who do not have a negative PCR test taken in the 72 hours prior to their arrival.

A quarantine hotel system for travellers arriving into the Republic of Ireland from high risk countries is due to come into effect later this week, according to the minister for public expenditure.

The mandatory quarantine legislation was approved two weeks ago.

It will apply to those arriving from 33 countries considered "high risk" and those without a negative Covid-19 test.

Mr Michael McGrath said "huge" progress had been made on the issue.

He told RTÉ News further details of how the system will operate will be outlined this week.

"Agreement has now been reached with the selected operator and in the next day or so Minister Stephen Donnelly will outline further details of the operational nature of the hotel quarantining, with a view to quarantining in hotels coming into effect later this week," he said.

This is a very complex issue and it does involve very significant interference with people's civil liberties, but it is for the greater good and that's why the Government was determined to do this properly and to get it done."

The 33 countries designated as "high risk" by the Irish government are made up mainly from countries in South America and Africa.

Brazil and South Africa were the first to be added to the list on 5 February with 18 more countries added to the list a week later.

On Sunday, the Department of Health in Ireland recorded the highest daily increase in coronavirus cases since 26 February, with 769 new cases.

There have been 230,599 cases since the pandemic began.

It also reported two additional Covid-related deaths, both of which occurred in March, bringing its total to 4,587.

Travellers to the Republic of Ireland from coronavirus hotspots will have to quarantine in hotels under new legislation.

The Irish cabinet has signed off on primary legislation to introduce mandatory hotel quarantine for passengers arriving from 20 countries.

It will also apply to people without a negative Covid-19 test, RTÉ reports.

The UK brought in hotel quarantine on Monday, in a bid to stop Covid variants entering the country.

Under the new legislation - which is likely to take two to three weeks to pass - first-time offenders could be fined £3,475 (€4,000) and face a month in prison for not adhering to the rules.

The legislation will initially apply to people arriving from 20 countries, including Austria and Brazil.

The UK rules require incoming passengers to pre-book and pay £1,750 to spend 10 days in government-sanctioned hotels. The cost covers the hotel stay, transport and testing.

Those required to stay in quarantine in the Republic of Ireland will have to quarantine for 14 days and undergo several tests for Covid-19. The cost is yet to be agreed on.

Private security firms are likely to be involved in the day-to-day running of the facilities, but gardaí (Irish police) will have a role if any laws are breached, according to RTÉ.

The first travellers required to stay at quarantine hotels have begun arriving in the UK.

All British and Irish citizens and UK residents who arrive in England after being in a high-risk Covid country now have to self-isolate in hotels.

The "red list" of 33 countries includes Portugal, Brazil and South Africa.

The new regulations, which aim to stop Covid variants entering the country, apply to arrivals who have been in one of those places in the past 10 days.

They have to pre-book and pay £1,750 to spend 10 days in government-sanctioned hotels. The cost covers the hotel stay, transport and testing.

In Scotland, the rule to stay in a hotel applies to travellers arriving directly by air from all countries outside the Common Travel Area (the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) - rather than just those from the list of 33 countries.

The "high-risk" list is subject to change at any time, and currently mainly comprises countries in South America and Africa, although Austria is also on the list.

Other countries include: Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burundi, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Lesotho, Malawi, Eswatini, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Rwanda, Suriname,
