Strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, watermelon (the list is endless), and anything else out of season are expensive, pale, tasteless versions of in-season produce. So don’t buy them. When you’re trying to save money on groceries, purchasing asparagus or raspberries from Mexico is not the way to do it.

Mitchell showed Kirtly around their new home. Downstairs, the former prison room and ominous wooden cage door were considered original. When I buy potatoes — I always buy from the closest producer to me I can find. Why would I buy potatoes from another country when I can buy 10 pounds from a local producer 30 minutes away?

What’s lurking at the back of your fridge that could be turned into a soup or stew? Those wizened apples would make an awesome apple crisp. Do you have canned vegetables that will expire soon? Use them up. Clean out your freezer and take inventory — you have some delicious stuff hiding there.

Next, Mitchell lifted up an old rug, and screamed. “We had an infestation of thousands and thousands of maggots,” she said. Nicole scrubbed the floor with bleach while Mitchell swept the larvas into the street. They discovered other issues with the house. It was freezing cold even on warm days. While Kirtly unpacked her belongings, Mitchell plugged in her electric kettle to brew a celebratory cup of tea in her old-world kitchen. As the real estate agent’s listing described, the house retained its old-fashioned charm, with original wooden beams that criss-crossed the walls. When she heard footsteps, Mitchell turned, expecting to find Kirtly. Instead she saw an ominous “black fog” drifting through a door. Mitchell was aghast. She had broken out in a cold sweat. When she peered out the window into Coffin Alley, she watched Kirtly lift another box from the car, and vowed to keep the incident a secret from her sick friend — and paying tenant.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for? THEN expand to your next state or province, and then finally the country nearest yours. Sure, butter from Ireland is a lovely indulgence, but so is the butter from your local dairy producer, at half the price.

When fruit and vegetables are in season and much more affordable — buy lots, eat loads of it fresh and then preserve, dry, or freeze the rest. It is one of the best ways to eat the healthiest produce year-round at the lowest price. And if you grow your own produce, or if you’re an urban forager — food is almost free.

I don’t care how small your apartment or home is. Find a way to squeeze in an energy-efficient apartment-sized freezer. They aren’t expensive and they open up doors to savings year-round.

Mitchell found another unsettling document among some papers in the kitchen. “It was a death certificate of the guy that hung himself there, six months before,” she told me. “I remember thinking, what a month to kill yourself, you know, near Halloween.”
