Being a doctor is the only thing that I’ve ever wanted to do. I want to help people. As the months have passed, I’ve felt compelled to return to the clinics and see my patients in person. But my uncertainty has remained the same and I have stayed in quarantine. My patients ask when they can come see me. I respond honestly: I don’t know.

It was easy for me to quarantine. I am a homebody by nature and I got used to being stuck in the house when I was sick. My clinics shut down for a week or two as we tried to adjust to our new reality. We soon shifted to telemedicine appointments and meetings by Zoom. I am lucky. I am a pediatric neurologist, and much of what I do can be done from afar. I checked in with my patients, talked about their seizures and headaches, listened to their concerns about Covid, their frustrations, their fears. As spring turned to summer, the hospital began to open up. Some of my colleagues started seeing patients in person. I kept doing visits from my room. I could see my patients virtually and I could keep breathing easy for a while. It was working for me until it wasn’t. There are some things you can’t see through a screen. You can’t examine reflexes from two counties over. You can’t assess little differences in tone if you can’t touch the muscle. You can’t comfort patients properly when your Wi-Fi connection is unreliable.

Each of the early days of the pandemic brought stories of how the virus affects the body in unexpected, terrifying ways. Each story brought up familiar, frightening feelings and memories of my own time spent in intensive care. I watched news reports about how quickly some patients decompensated — how they walked into an emergency room and ended up on a ventilator within hours — and felt a phantom endotracheal tube in my throat. I was haunted by half-forgotten dreams of drowning, nightmare memories from my time spent on a ventilator years ago. I listened to my colleagues’ stories about patients with Covid-related neurological disease and recalled the panic that I felt when I first realized that I couldn’t move my arm during my stroke.

The Raspberry Pi 4 itself will not be able to achieve its full potential with the NVMe, but it will have two advantages over your SD card — reliability and sheer speed. Buying an NVMe and its associated adapter isn’t much more expensive than an older M2 drive, and you will now have that in your parts box if you need to repurpose it later (see my note on the CM4).

Still, I am reminded of my illness every time I try to button up a shirt or choke a little on a drink or see my scars in the mirror. There is so much uncertainty about how a sick body will respond to an illness. I know what caused my cancer and I don’t know if it will come back. I know what caused my stroke and I don’t know if I will have another. I know what happened the last time I had a critical illness and I don’t know if my body can handle that again. I don’t know what will happen if I contract Covid-19. I only know that I am scared to find out.

Now mirror the SD card to the NVMe, but be really careful with the device names. You don’t want to overwrite your OS on the machine you’re using to do the mirroring operation.

Studying a problem has always helped me process my emotions about it. I developed a little routine during the pandemic. I pored over case reports and watched MSNBC. I got in the habit of checking their chyrons in the morning and at night, and saw how the numbers continued to rise. I watched journalists interview nurses and doctors, and I focused on the pressure wounds that ringed their noses and mouths, noticed how the doctors’ eyes filled with tears, and I felt my eyes do the same. I watched the stories about the pandemic in other countries. I saw overrun hospitals and stressed physicians. I heard about how they rationed equipment in some places. I turned the television off and found the same ethical debates on social media. There were impassioned messages saying that disabilities should preclude you from treatment. I read arguments about quality of life. I wondered if they’d use that reasoning to deny care to me. I turned the computer off.

You can upgrade the storage in your Raspberry Pi 4 with an NVMe drive. These drives usually plug into a PCIe lane which gives them a potential throughput of over 3000M/s for read and write access.

What about UASP you say? UASP stands for USB Attached SCSI and according to StarTech can enable better throughput over USB and decrease CPU usage. It just happens to be enabled on the hard-drive and enclosure combination I’ve picked out for you in the bill of materials.

Whilst there, why not go to Performance Options -> GPU Memory and change it from 64MB to 16MB. This gives you a little more RAM back, if you don’t use the RPi to run a graphical desktop.
