Nearly a decade ago, the Director of Software Development at my employer at the time, hired a Software Engineer III, who we’ll call Gary. We also hired an SE II called Mitch around the same time but we’ll get to that later. For the first few months, Gary was quiet and mostly kept to himself, hard at work on a highly technical feature — air and fluid flow animation in our real-time 3D mechanical training software. A feature that everyone in the company had been pipe-dreaming about for years but never took it on, due to multiple challenges. This was our guy to finally do it.

In 2012, New York passed a legislature requiring anyone with a felony would be required to submit DNA to the state. It was this law that led to the capture of Broadnax, as he hadn’t been a suspect, but a random hit with the national database linked him to the slayings.

It is unlikely that Broadnax will face justice. He has been diagnosed with dementia and has been declared unfit to stand trial. Prosecutors are reviewing all available options to achieve justice, but it likely won’t be a criminal trial.

Shortly after the feature’s success, Gary held an engineering presentation. It was about architecture, namely around object lifecycle, Dependency Inversion, ad-hoc lifetimes versus explicitly scoped objects, the detriments of certain allocation anti-patterns, code coupling preventing unit test coverage, and how it’s all connected to many of our internal engineering problems. The attendees who got it were nonplussed and quite possibly embarrassed, because the critique wasn’t all that flattering to those who had built the company’s intellectual property since nearly the beginning.

Although the cases have yet to be formally linked, a Virginia Beach Spokesperson confirmed that the cases are similar, and a serial killer connection has been looked into. They stated that they are in the process of “connecting the dots.”

Broadnax had a lengthy criminal history. In the 1980s, he had two convictions for sexual assault. He had eleven convictions in total, including assault, burglary, weapons offences, and trespassing. Many of these cases were connected to sexual assaults, but he made deals with prosecutors to plead guilty to charges if the assault charges were dropped. His MO was entering a woman’s home through a window and assaulting a woman at gunpoint.

By the time he had the feature ready for QA, it looked better than I’d at least imagined, was more performant than we had expected, and it was backed by thousands of unit test assertions. This, in an aging flagship codebase with a complete lack of unit tests. Needless to say, all levels of management were pleased with the long-awaited feature.

DNA evidence is likely what police will use to connect those dots. In 2018, it was announced that there was a strong lead in the 1973 murders of Janice Pietropola and Lynn Seethaler. And in 2019, they made an arrest forty-six years after their murders. Eighty-two-year-old Ernest Broadnax was arrested in New York.

Broadnax is being investigated for connections to several other murders in the area following Janice and Lynn’s murder. Beverly Christensen (murdered in 1974), Marcia Estelle Remick (murdered in 1976), Barbara Jean Monaco (missing since in 1978), Brenda Bancroft (murdered in 1979), Alice Eskew (murdered in 1979), Joanne Zwingman and Christine Pilczak (murdered in 1983).

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of answers to online questions about the fabled 10x developer. Some people want to be them, others want to stay far away from them. Does the myth, the legend, live up to its name, or is it just a relative perception?

Broadnax was jailed from 1985–1989, a period when the murders stopped — following that, Broadnax relocated to New York City, where his criminal behaviour followed him, but the crimes in Virginia Beach wained.

Although this was the first major homicide case in the area, it wouldn’t be the last. In the years following Janice and Lynn’s murders, ten more women either disappeared from the area or were murdered between 1974–1980.

The women were all young, attractive, and the manner of their death seemed consistent. They all included sexual assault, strangulation, and extreme violence. Some women were murdered in their homes, and others were found in their cars or dumped on the beaches.
