PORTAGE, Mich. — President Joe Biden, during a visit to Portage on Friday, touted his administration's COVID-19 vaccine efforts and promised we will eventually get back to normal.

"I can't give you a date when this crisis will end, but I can tell you — we are doing everything possible to have that date come sooner than later," the president said following his tour of the state-of-the-art vaccine plant in Portage, Michigan.

However, the president said, the nation will have 600 million doses by July.

“Mr. President, the challenge is accepted, and we will try to do our best," Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said while introducing the Biden.

Biden spent most of his speech urging Congress to pass his pandemic relief plan. He said the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan would help schools reopen safely, get more vaccines into arms, produce 7 million jobs in 2021, and keep Americans on their feet during the pandemic.

According to the White House, the president’s plan would invest $50 billion in a massive expansion of testing, providing funds for the purchase of rapid tests, investments to expand lab capacity, and support to help schools and local governments implement regular testing protocols.

Biden addressed critics that say the nearly $2 trillion price tag is too high.

"Let me ask them: What would they have me cut? What would they have me leave out," Biden said. "Should we not invest $20 billion to vaccinate the nation? Should we not invest $290 million to extend unemployment insurance to the 11 million Americans who are unemployed so they can get by and back to work? Should we not invest $50 billion to help small businesses stay open?"

Biden spent about two hours in the Kalamazoo area Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, arriving at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport about 1:45 p.m. Air Force One had department for the return trip to Washington by 4 p.m.

The president said he wanted to see where the vaccines were made, and thank the people doing the work. He also said he wants Americans to understand the massive undertaking underway to fight the pandemic.

Upon taking office, Biden set a goal of administering 100 million vaccine doses in his first 100 days. He said the U.S. will have enough supply of the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the summer to inoculate 300 million Americans.
