I work in digital product design, and I’ve often wondered about the benefits of applying industry favourite methodologies for productivity to your home life. Most people I know love a good to-do list, but is it possible to take it up a level (or seven) without driving yourself, or the people in your life, completely mad?
This wasn’t more than an idle musing until I had children, as being naturally organised it wasn’t that hard to live a fun, full life as a busy single person or later as one half of a couple, or to be honest as a mum to one child in normal life (and I am grateful to have had the privilege to live such a life — I am very aware of how glib that sounds if you live in poverty, or are in an abusive relationship, or experience any of the many things that make life difficult).

But fast forward a few years and now I have a husband, a toddler and a 7 month old baby in my life and our home. Ok, I signed up for that, I anticipated hard work but I was up for it. But then we find ourselves in a global pandemic when the baby arrives. And then in national lockdown. With no extra hands to call upon (safely). And now again in national lockdown, but with even more dire warnings and an even greater desperation for normality. Suddenly thoughts about productivity and managing multiple individuals needs with a collective goal of a happy life become more relevant…
