Rep. Debbie Dingle, D-Michigan, underwent emergency surgery on Friday for a perforated ulcer and is expected to be hospitalized for several days as she heals.

"The operation has been a success and is recovering well," her spokeswoman, MacKenzie Smith, said in a statement sent on Friday evening. Dingle, 67, underwent jaw surgery earlier this year.

The surgery took place at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, and Dingle is expected to recover for five to seven days. In a letter to the Detroit Free Press, he said he began experiencing stomach ache on Thursday which worsened on Friday.

John Dingle, the longest serving member of Congress in his history, passed away in 2019 at the age of 92. Biden, a good friend of Dingelle, gave a eulogy to Dingle at his funeral in Dearborn. 

Most recently, Debbie Dingle has been at the center of congressional efforts to unite unions and environmentalists and industry to develop policies that would encourage electric vehicle adoption while ensuring workers get union wages.

Dingell uses over-the-counter pain relievers after previous surgery because he doesn't want to use opioids. Smith said Friday after Dingle was hospitalized that she "insisted that her (current) experience be used as a warning that NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like the ones she's taken) can be harmful as well."
