Moving on with exploring ways of prettifying your React code in the framework’s realm, I found a dead-end. While there are design patterns and simple conventions I could explore, those require assessing their technical implications on a case-by-case basis, and I was looking for something more general. So the next step would need to be in the JavaScript layer.

Drag performers, by comparison, are much more honest with their audience and with themselves. They’re embodying characters, sure; but at the same time, many performers also use drag to explore their own identities. To do that on a stage takes a remarkable amount of confidence and courage.

So often, designers are trying to obfuscate the artifice in our work. Authenticity is the drag we put on as we build experiences predicated on community and self-expression when our true intention is conversion.

Walking away from a mediocre love doesn’t make you greedy. Your expectations aren’t too high. You should be in a relationship with an equal. You should feel like your partner is exerting as much energy as you.

You shouldn’t feel bad about walking away from someone who doesn’t fit you, either. Although you might have a hard time getting over this person, and they might have trouble getting over you, that doesn’t mean you need to stay. That doesn’t mean your options are limited.

I keep returning to this example, but it illustrates so many of the “going to cheat” boxes. I once asked my old friend what she would do if she caught her husband cheating. She said she’d leave him. That was in the midst of her admitting she’d been cheating on him, which struck me as very strange.

Any time you express some part of yourself, you have to be a little bit vulnerable. I think a queered design field would make space for authenticity and vulnerability. To be honest about the intent of our designs as we build a show around it. To acknowledge the vulnerability of people who are looking to the products we design to improve their lives. To be responsible with how vulnerable they are when they are in experiences that are not of their design but ours.

You shouldn’t remain trapped in a one-sided relationship. You shouldn’t force yourself to stay in the same situation, simply because you’re used to where you are. You shouldn’t allow your history to hold you in place. You shouldn’t allow your guilt to decide your future.
