Season Three of CASTLEVANIA gets a little deeper into its character

Castlevania , an animated adaptation of one of the most popular game series, is here with its third season. In the previous two seasons, the story centered on Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso) and Alucard (James Callis) teamed up to fight Dracula (Graham McTavish) who is also the father of Alucard. After the final episode of the second season where Dracula was successfully assassinated, what would happen next to these three heroes?

This is where season three comes in, telling what happened after the epic fight at the end of last season. Trevor and Sypha are still adventuring and killing monsters. Alucard is now guarding his father's palace as well as the Belmont residence alone. Carmilla (Jaime Murray) returns to his residence in Styria with Hector (Theo James) as his prisoner. And Isaac (Adetokumboh M'Cormack) is still on his mission to avenge Dracula's death against all of humanity.

In its third season, Castlevania feels more mature in character development. Each character really feels like they have had time to develop and give their own story, in contrast to the previous season where a lot of time was spent telling Dracula (Dracula's story is still cool, so I'm not going to complain at all). Especially Isaac's story, which we know now that he already has a lot of troops to fight against all the enemies who oppose him.

Isaac here is in a unique position. He is not someone who is kind at heart. He intends to wipe out all of humanity, or at least that's Dracula's mission he wants to continue. But it is not a mission without a reason. During his travels, he often encountered humans who were indeed acting mean to him. Isaac, even though he had restrained himself, still couldn't let the people live. By the way they tell their journey, we as spectators also finally become support for him. Every time he eradicates a human and turns him into a monster, we also feel the excitement even though it's actually quite a creepy act.

Trevor and Sypha also find the opportunity to have a story of their own. In the previous season, we didn't have much of the two of them together. But in the third season, we are given 10 episodes that tell the adventures of both of them in a mysterious small village. Trevor's relaxed and straightforward nature often invites humor that other characters don't have. Likewise, when Trevor's character meets Sypha's straight and not talkative nature, it often becomes a point of humor in season three.

Apart from Trevor and Sypha, there is also Alucard. Now he lives alone in the magnificent palace of his father's legacy. His daily life is just fishing, cooking, and "chatting" with his two dolls that resemble Trevor and Sypha to fill his spare time. Actually all of his time is free time, he doesn't have any mission, has no more purpose. All that changes a little when he meets Sumi (Rila Fukushima) and Taka (Toru Uchikado), two vampire hunters from Japan who want to train with him.

Taka and Sumi are two soldiers from Cho's ex-prisoner in a hidden castle in Japan. Cho, as you know, was the general under Dracula who had fought alongside him the previous season. At first Alucard didn't want to train them, but come to think of it maybe the two of them really need to hunt down other vampires. Alucard's story is perhaps the most calm story of all the other characters, where on a daily basis he only trains Taka and Sumi, who then cooks dinner for them.

Meanwhile, as for Carmilla's own story, nothing much happened. Carmilla is an astute vampire, where she and her three vampire sisters are proposing plans to take over the surrounding area. However, during the third season, no progress was felt at all with his plans. In fact, what is more often told is how Hector's fate was in the hands of Carmilla.

Hector, like Isaac, is a forgemaster who is able to turn humans into monsters to serve him. Carmilla's entire plan hinges on Hector, so maybe because of that season three tells a lot more about Hector than the kidnapper. And it's not uncommon for Hector to choose the "not so smart" option that often leaves me scratching my head. Maybe Hector and Carmilla's story was the story I didn't like the least in season three because it went quite slowly.

And that's actually an issue I had in season three. The stories the characters have are slow and not much is happening. Everything also doesn't intersect with each other, which makes me feel like this is an anthology series with each character having their own story. The entire third season feels like a square off for its fourth season, which ultimately makes season three feel a little hollow as we don't yet know how each character's story interacts with the rest of the story.

Trevor and Sypha's story is probably the most exciting of all the characters. They also meet a new character who is quite fun to watch, Saint Germain (Bill Nighy). The three of them, they investigate a dark gang in the village of Lindenfeld. Only their story has a meaningful development, while other characters still have difficulty finding what their story's purpose really is. But maybe it is. This third season is a long preparation for the fourth season, so every story has no definite conclusion, because they want to prepare space for their fourth season.

Its empty story doesn't mean this third season still doesn't have brutal action. With animations that are both beautiful and captivating, season three looks very beautiful. Not all episodes have a splashy fighting action, but every action is beautifully made and sadistic. How Trevor uses his whip, Sypha with his magic skills , or when Isaac leads his troops to finish off the humans who are standing in front of him, every action is really interesting to watch.
