Archaeologists discovered a gigantic 5,000-year-old complex of ancient burial mounds and stone-lined tombs in Poland after detection from satellite photos.Excavations carried out near the city of Dbiany uncovered seven Neolithic tombs as well as remains of an early medieval fortress and the burial of two Bronze Age horses.
The dozen ancient burial mounds found, each between 40 meters and 50 meters long, were made of earth, stone, and a palisade of now decayed pillars.

The team of experts suspects it is a relic of a prehistoric settlement in the area by the Neolithic Funnel Beaker.
"The megalithic cemetery at Dbiany is one of the largest and most interesting sites of this kind in Central Europe. This gives us extraordinary data about burial habits in the Funnel Beaker culture," said Marcin Przybya and Jan Bulas, archaeologists involved in this discovery.

The Funnel Beakers were farmers who migrated to what is now Spain and France.
Archaeologists have previously found long ancient burial mounds made by the Funnel Beakers elsewhere in Poland, as well as in Germany and southern Scandinavia.
But it is thought that the ancient cemetery near Dbiany could be one of the largest Beaker Funnel burial complexes ever discovered.

This finding himself was made by Bulas, who first noticed that the straight lines seen in satellite photos on the ground could be caused by the underground remains of the four-sided structure.
The four-sided shape Bulas sees in satellite photos turns out to be an early medieval fortress and moat, before the first Polish empire was founded in 1025.
Now, archaeologists plan to continue excavations to learn more about the ancient burial mounds and Neolithic graves as well as the remains of a medieval fortress and moat.

It is thought it may have been a military camp and no similar structures have been found in Poland.
