On the one hand, you would never want their job because it seems like their job is to tell you no and take the creativity out of your work. On the other, if you become a product owner yourself, you could “fix” all of these “problems.” Some designers have a mind for strategy and development that would make a transition to the product side pretty seamless. Approaching product building with a design and user-centered mindset would behoove customers and companies. So if you could handle moving out of Sketch and into PowerPoint, this could be an excellent route to take.

If you are a purple-striped zebra, design managers are looking for you because design teams everywhere genuinely need your help. If your stripes haven’t fully developed, test out some design processes in your current role and see how your team could leverage them to create a more mature design org.

Clooney and his friends upped the industry’s game by bringing an authentic, high-quality product to the market, and hopefully, they also use the profits to improve the world in even far more meaningful ways. Just imagine what the Clooney Foundation will do.

The question with this option is, what is this role? Does it exist? Would you have to market yourself as a vague UX Consultant and put together proposals to fix brick and mortar experiences? Or how could a UX role fit into urban planning and development? Bringing a user-centered mind into government would certainly fix some issues (I’m looking at you, DMV.) I’m sure there’s a way into the physical world, but at this moment, I haven’t seen this role pop up on any job boards. You may have to get creative and carve your own path for this route, but I’m optimistic it would be worth it.

The more job descriptions I read, the more it seems that companies want a designer who is also a researcher, copywriter, developer, and project manager all in one. While I highly advise against these roles (this topic could be a whole article of my ranting), when you have multiple skill sets, you are more marketable. Just avoid becoming a jack of all trades, master of none.

Bringing your UX skills to the physical world is an option that has intrigued me for several years. Every day I encounter non-digital experiences that could be improved by thinking through the user’s end-to-end experience. For example, Trader Joe’s doesn’t put signs above each aisle to tell customers where to find the items on their list. I’m sure they do this on purpose so that we wander around the store aimlessly and end up with a full cart, but this is a dark pattern. We need proper navigation and information architecture, not more pumpkin pancake mix (albeit delicious).

DesignOps could be considered role hopping, but it is a beast of its own in my mind, and it takes a unique skill set and personality. A design operations role “creates standardized systems and services to free up designers so they can concentrate on design work, instead of things like budgeting and scheduling,” as defined in Invision’s DesignOps Handbook.

Try out new roles in your current position to gauge your interest level without taking too big of a plunge. You’ll be incredibly marketable, having in-depth knowledge of two specialties, and get the opportunity to learn and grow in your career.

The number of specialties within UX seems to grow by the day, so dabbling in something new is always available. For example, I’m an interaction designer traditionally, but I find prototyping and animation work fun. My design coworkers have been talented at digging into data/analytics, and some were great at coming up with research questions and creating user tests. Even if you don’t want to make a role switch, there’s always great value in broadening your knowledge base.

Talk to your product owners for advice on how to transition over to their side of the house. They’ll be able to give you the most personalized advice on what leadership qualities you need to improve on and if there are any specific courses to take based on your company’s products. They can also talk you through what the role really entails so you can better gauge your interest level.
