What began as a diversion has bloomed into a full-blown virtual campus — with only parts of North and West Campus remaining to be built — and an effort that has united students and alumni from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Yes, yes, but what is it? What does it do? Even reports on the Slack acquisition seem to be dodging the question. In the New York Times story about the deal, it’s not until the 18th paragraph, after a thorough discussion of deal particulars and of Slack’s business, that we are told the acquirer is a company that “provides marketing and sales software, among other products.” Others labeled the firm a maker of “technology that helps companies sell products” or simply a “software giant.”

The core idea is to look at content as a tool which makes experiences more meaningful and even gives an upper hand to make the visuals look the best that they can. Easily understandable and highly stylised content truly helps push products into the upper tiers.

All of these things are true. Salesforce is a so-called software-as-a-service company, offering various tools that help businesses sell to more clients or stay in useful contact with existing ones (jargon translation: CRM). Most of these tools — which take the form of software that compiles customer data for a sales team or manages and tracks e-commerce orders and deliveries — are focused on sales and marketing, customer service, and so on. Salesforce’s past acquisitions have been in the realm of helping businesses communicate more effectively with other businesses: data analytics firm Tableau, software-integration company MuleSoft, e-commerce tech specialist Demandware, and a bunch of other companies you’ve probably never heard of unless they are directly relevant to your job (and even then, maybe not?).

And that gets at the head-scratching over what Salesforce does. It’s hardly surprising that lots of people don’t know the details of a B2B giant with basically no consumer-facing products. I suspect that Salesforce puzzlement is most acute in the Bay Area, and that this is precisely because its Salesforce Tower headquarters is a prominent, relatively recent, and perhaps not universally popular addition to the San Francisco skyline — so everyone knows the name, but many have no reason to be familiar with its actual business. Similarly, its name pops up in business headlines over stories that focus more on financial performance than the details of its offerings, so it rings a bell and remains mysterious at the same time. And if you’ve missed either of those, you’ve probably seen one of its many commercials resulting from a $7.9 billion ad spend this year alone.

The result is “CornellCraft,” a stunning virtual replica of Cornell’s Ithaca campus, which has attracted more than 1,000 builders and players from around the globe since it launched earlier this year.

During the unexpected break last spring, Brandon Axelrod ’21, a student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Jesse Potts ’21, a student in the College of Engineering, filled their extra time with Minecraft, a popular “sandbox” gaming series that allows players to build elaborate virtual worlds. Both had begun experimenting with building a virtual Cornell campus; before long, they connected on Reddit and recruited a group of 25 fellow students and young alumni who signed on as volunteer builders.

Tech writer Justin Pot tweeted almost the same thing. Many others chimed in with similar head-scratching jokey explanations, unflattering comments about the company’s 1,000-foot San Francisco office tower, and at least one assertion that Salesforce confusion reveals “the vaporization of production under late capital.”

To the stock market, Salesforce is no mystery: It’s a $200 billion company with 2019 revenue of more than $17 billion and earnings of around $1.74 billion last quarter. It’s been around for more than two decades, was founded by Marc Benioff, and has made more than 60 previous acquisitions.

When Salesforce formally announced its intention to purchase Slack for $27.7 billion yesterday, there was a notable elephant in the room: While Slack has become widely known as a workplace messaging tool, Salesforce is known as a company that, well, lots of people find generally puzzling. Radiotopia co-founder and 99% Invisible host Roman Mars seemed to speak for many when he tweeted in response to the Slack news: “I can finally understand at least one thing Salesforce does.”

That’s being said, Go was designed while having a set of particular problems to solve and initially possessing a solid base of the best features from such noble programming languages as C, Pascal, Modula, and Oberon. It also kept in mind useful characteristics of languages — Python, C , Java, and so on — criticism of which Go was meant to address.
