The Beatles: When vocalist Paul McCartney paid off his blanket debt

A letter from Beatles vocalist Sir Paul McCartney regarding paying off the missing blanket "debt" has been auctioned. The singer carried the blanket after living in a garden house with his bandmate George Harrison in north Wales.
Decades later the owner of the place, Irene Brierley, wrote to Sir Paul reminding him that he was still short on a blanket.

The musician returned a check for £ 30, and the letter is now on sale.
Sir Paul and Harrison became friends with the Brierleys when they were on vacation in 1958, before becoming stars.

The two friends knocked on the door of their garden home in Harlech, Gwynedd, and asked permission to pitch a tent in their garden.

But after it rained heavily on their first night's stay, they took shelter in the house and ended up staying there for a week.
They became acquainted with young John Brierley, who was also a musician, and later watched his band The Viking perform in a local pub.

Brierley also remembers playing snooker for days on end while listening to Elvis Presley's first album, and Sir Paul playing the family piano, trying to emulate a solo part in the middle of Buddy Holly's song, Think It Over.
The following year Sir Paul and Harrison returned to Harlech, and that's when the blankets were brought.

The blanket incident was still remembered by Brierley's mother long after Beatlemania swept the world, and in the '80s, she wrote Sir Paul a letter reminding him.

The Beatles vocalist replied to the letter, writing: "Mrs. Brierley (Irene), your letter has finally reached me and I apologize for 'my debt'.

"I remember well when we had fun in Harlech and hope this check can put an end to our case.

"Sorry the writing is bad because I tried to write this on a rocking express train! My condolences for your husband's [death] - he is a very nice man. Send my best wishes to your sons.
The letter is currently being auctioned through an auction house that specializes in Beatles memorabilia Track for an initial price of £ 3,000.

Donald Trump also commented on the film Parasite won an Oscar

The success of the film Parasite at the 2020 Oscars was able to shake the world. Parasite is the only non-English film that has won the 2020 Oscar 'Best Picture' category.

It seems that not everyone likes the success of the Parasite film, including the president, Donald Trump.

In his speech in Collorado on Thursday (20/02/2019) yesterday Donald Trump openly expressed his objection to the victory of the film Parasite.

"How bad was the Academy Awards this year? Did you see them?" Trump said,
"And the winner is… a film from South Korea! What was that about?" he continued, imitating the style of the presenter when giving the Oscar winner announcement.
"We have quite a bit of trouble with South Korea in trade. Besides, they gave him the best film of the year. That's good? I don't know. Come on Gone With the Wind. Can we get Gone With the Wind back? Sunset Boulevard. So many films. great, "he said, mentioning several film titles.

"The winner is from South Korea. I think it's Best Foreign Film, right? Best Foreign Film? Has this happened before?" he continued, continuing his speech
While Donald Trump criticized the film, the distributor of the film Parasite in the United States commented on this.

"Understandably, he can't read," he wrote on Twitter @neon.

Oscar night out of play in Hong Kong for the first time since 1969

Local TV decided not to show the Academy Awards, a regular Oscar show on Hong Kong screens since 1969. Content problems made this Hollywood film awards night unseen in mainland China.

Hollywood film's top awards ceremony, the Academy Awards or the so-called Oscars have been broadcast in Hong Kong for more than 50 years by terrestrial television station TVB on its English-language channel for free.

But for this year, there will be no television channel that will broadcast the Oscar ceremony. Since the Chinese government has increasingly cracked down on artistic expression, there have been doubts whether Oscar will also air in mainland China.

China's state broadcaster CCTV, which previously aired the awards night, has not confirmed whether it will air this year.

Why is the Oscar not showing?

TVB stated that the decision not to screen the Oscar was a "purely commercial" decision.

But the decision not to broadcast the awards night ceremony came after Bloomberg News reported earlier this month that the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda department had ordered state-controlled media to ignore Oscar and not broadcast the ceremony live.
Hong Kong newspaper The Standard wrote that critical comments on the mainland China situation previously made by Chloe Zhao, the Beijing-born American director of the Oscar-nominated film Nomadland, could have prompted the move.

"Nomadland", which won the top prize at this year's Golden Globes awards was also highly seeded to win a major award at the Oscars.
The nomination of a short documentary about the 2019 protests in Hong Kong entitled "Do Not Split" may also worry Chinese authorities.

Search for the movie title Do Not Split is blocked on the Chinese internet. Content that the government deems politically sensitive is routinely filtered and removed. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, which presented the award, did not comment.

Art restrictions in Hong Kong?

Although the semi-autonomous state of Hong Kong maintains greater cultural freedoms than mainland China, that is changing rapidly.

Following large and often violent democratic protests in 2019, Beijing has been actively rooting out the opposition.
In recent weeks, theaters have pulled out the documentary.

In addition, a university canceled an unopened press photography exhibition and a museum of contemporary art said it would allow security officials to inspect its collections.

Earlier this month, Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam said authorities were on `` full alert '' to ensure that exhibitions in the city did not violate new rules. Rap / vlz (AP, AFP)
