nce Hadrian’s marriage to Vibia Sabina remained childless, he did not entirely fulfill his marital duties. This could have proven devastating for the succession. Additionally, there was the fact that the two men shared real and genuine feelings. According to historian Royston Lambert, Antinous was “the one person who seems to have connected most profoundly with Hadrian.” It is also known that Hadrian liked to write erotic poems and autobiographies about his young lovers, so it must be assumed that he also bestowed this honor upon the young Antinous.

This doesn’t mean neglect you in favour of other people or they give away all your stuff. It means they treat all people with respect, including people who can’t improve their social status or help them get a better job. They offer their time, energy and expertise freely when they can AND they’re innately good-humoured about it.

In my out-patient psychiatric practice, I recently treated a young man who had, among other problems, severe acne. He told me that his dermatologist had begun a new treatment. My patient asked the doctor how long before there might be results. The dermatologist replied, “It depends on your emotional state.” Something inside the young man leapt with excitement to hear this, as he thought he might finally have the chance to talk about his chronic anxiety. But the dermatologist simply concluded the appointment and told him to return in a month.

This patient did well in treatment with me. In a couple of months his mood, anxiety, and even acne greatly improved. Unfortunately, he had endured 10 years of anxiety and discomfort before finally getting the treatment he needed. Sadly, this delay is often par for the course when it comes to sorting through — and appropriately treating — common life problems that have understandable, and even severe, emotional consequences.

Even if they have big plans and dreams of their own, they make space for yours. They don’t belittle your ideas or pour ice water on your endeavours. They help you to go after what makes you feel happy or content.

My parents, when confronted, lost themselves in a wasteland of justifications and recrimination. What were we supposed to do, Angela? Did you forget what we sacrificed for you to be educated here? The sweat and tears we shed? The family and friends we left behind? We don’t even have health insurance ourselves, how could we have paid for a “dog doctor”?

I’m referring to life experiences we consider normal — in the sense that they happen, expectedly, to nearly everyone. Many reliably lead to emotional difficulties that will fester without some kind of concerted intervention. Naming and understanding these experiences can go a long way to supporting those who suffer because of them.

The twins’ assured me, repeatedly, that she is still alive. This is America, they said, remember? And Americans value the lives of animals, sometimes even more than human lives! Someone must’ve taken her home!

But I wasn’t listening. I was thinking about a piece of the twins’ story that broke me open: When their father returned to the construction site to resume his job, Mickey was waiting at the exact spot where he dropped her off, limping and wagging her tail. There she stayed — with unwavering faith for her humans — for a whole week before she disappeared.

Next, they needed to take care of the weakest link: me. A unanimous decision was reached to never speak about Mickey again. Surely, they thought, surely there are enough adults in the house to distort a 12-year-old’s sense of reality? The reality distortion field would be strong enough to protect me from any psychological scars. How can you be sad about an animal who never was? It was, to them, the perfect plan.
