We need to learn from them so we don’t make the same mistakes multiple times, understand that they sting less over time, and that we wouldn’t be where we are without them.

Despite clearly understanding that we aren’t perfect, we choose to shame ourselves whenever we screw up instead of embracing the opportunity for improvement. Don’t hide from the shame of a mistake; embrace it. When you can look at your mistakes rationally and learn from them, you keep from making them a second time. It’s easier to take ownership when you don’t run from them.

lling point is the rights it holds for sporting events, specifically cricketing tournaments like the annual IPL and the quadrennial ICC World Cup. These are some of the most-watched sporting events in the world, and they bring in significant ad revenue to Hotstar. In 2019, for example, Hotstar set the record for the most number of people watching a live event on an over-the-top service with over 18.6 million people tuning in for the IPL finals. This record was eclipsed during the ICC world cup semi-finals the same year when over 25 million viewers tuned in. One drawback to this subscriber base is the fall in numbers once the tournament ends, but Hotstar tackles this by offering attractive yearlong plans that offer better bang for the buck than monthly plans. This way, the users are tied in for at least a year, long enough for the next season of the tournament to begin. And in addition to cricket, Hotstar also broadcasts events from other popular sports like soccer, tennis, Formula 1, badminton, hockey, kabaddi, martial arts, and e-sports. This makes Hotstar the preferred destination in India for any sporting event, something that even ESPN, Disney’s sports-focused behemoth, does not match.

That’s when I first heard about LeetCode- a programming platform which has now become the staple for coding interview preparation. The platform consists of interview style coding questions with an integrated, online IDE which lets you submit and verify the correctness of your solution. It also contains a stack-overflow style discussion forum which lets you post and upvote/downvote solutions to the problems.

Mistakes are a part of life. Don’t be afraid to make them, be afraid to not make them. Hiding from them will keep you from realizing your greatest successes. It’s important to understand that a life well-lived is going to be littered with errors — personal, professional, etc. Our job is not to run away from them but to understand why they happened.

You know the really big mistakes that you made when you were a teenager, the ones you thought had “ruined your life?” They weren’t such a big deal at twenty-five, were they? Guess what? The mistakes that you made at twenty-five or thirty-five or forty-five won’t be a big deal in a couple of days-months-years either.

I crawled home from the bar that November evening and started practicing problems on LeetCode. Over the next few weeks I practiced several dozen problems. Practicing made a huge difference that time and I eventually landed and accepted an offer from Google in 2016.

Life is not lived in a straight line. Every decision we make is a step forward, but not always in the direction we want to be going at that moment. Mistakes are nothing more than stepping stones on the way to who we want to be. Sometimes they are only short-term blips in our day — the things that we initially consider mistakes have the chance to end up being great decisions in the end.

Today, if you are interview prepping, you’re going to have to spend some late evenings practicing interview problems on LeetCode. In the words of one of my good friends and colleague:

As you begin to see that even your big mistakes fade into the background you start to realize that they don’t define who you are. It may have stung a bit in the beginning, but the pain eventually wears off. This allows you to see that you will get on the other side of your mistakes, and positions you to take some of the risks that you’d been previously avoiding.

Until you take the emotion out of making a mistake and instead consider your error rationally, you’ll be hard-pressed to take advantage of the learning opportunity in front of you. Treating them for the growth opportunity they are, instead of the negative thing that you are naturally inclined to make them out to be, changes the power of mistakes. It takes the fear of making them away.

I’d never seen anything like LeetCode before. Platforms I’d been using for interview preparation before LeetCode had been passive — with information flowing in one direction (from the author to me). There was the quintessential interview preparation book “Cracking the Coding Interview”. Then there was CareerCup/Glassdoor which had user generated content that could be perused to find commonly asked interview questions. The main shortcomings of these platforms are:
