Where does the French bulldog come from?

The origin of the French Bulldog is one of the most controversial in the history of all dog breeds. Despite the name, this small dog is a direct descendant of the English one crossed with smaller breeds, the pug and the terrier, in order to obtain a small and lovable dog. It is regarded as a dwarf Bulldog.

It is a long story. In fact, it was the English lace workers of Nottinghamshire who, during the Industrial Revolution, immigrated to France, to bring their little friends across the Channel, where these dogs, later baptized as bouledoguesfrançais, entered the homes of Parisian families as pet dogs. Ironically, therefore, the French bulldog probably has English origins.

It is commonly believed to derive from some specimens of English bulldogs that were crossed with smaller dog breeds to create a smaller dog that did not have the typical English bulldog problems, including that of an overly large skull, which makes childbirth for females is difficult and dangerous.

It may not sound important, but make sure your pug learns to respond to its own name. You do this mainly by always linking his name to a command. Reward him especially in the beginning every time he responds to his name.

At the end of the 19th century it made its debut in the United States. The times when the French bulldog would become one of the favorite companion dogs of Hollywood stars among other animals were yet to come, but soon the “Frenchie" as the French bulldog is known in those parts - became popular with the classrooms.

The distinctive features

It is a very companion dog of the Molosser type, with an amiable and affectionate character, very intelligent and extremely attached to the family to which it always asks for care and attention. Just like the English bulldog or  pug, he is very lazy  in spite of a solid and massive musculature and physical structure, which over the years have earned him the nickname 'little Hercules'. He loves to sleep curled up on the sofa or next to his master, although he is endowed with good dynamism.
