In a 2017 incident, a couple in New Jersey raised $400,000 to ostensibly benefit a generous homeless veteran who had given a woman his last $20 when she ran out of gas. It turned out that the entire narrative had been concocted by the trio after they met outside a casino, and the scam unraveled when the veteran complained he’d received only a small portion of the funds.

Some scammers have started crowdfunding campaigns in the names of other people’s dead children; others have wrongly claimed that their own children are sick or dead. At times, these scams have cast shade on the whole crowdfunding industry.

Dialogue can feel “false” when it contains two characters who move through an argument, going back and forth like a good tennis match. Real dialogue is rarely like that. Misunderstandings, “prepared” speeches, and interruptions abound. You can make your dialogue richer by including these elements.

When you have dialogue, you know you are in a scene. So put your characters in physical space. They have bodies, remember, so what are they doing with them? Are they smoking? Drinking something? Are they sitting or pacing through the room? What are they doing with their hands? Smiling? Frowning? Do they have any physical tics when they speak? Remember, a lot of our communication is nonverbal.

One of the items asks, “Are direct friends and family making donations and leaving supportive comments?” The checklist suggests that contributions from friends and family can help demonstrate that a cause is legitimate.

Include the actions that characters do in between their words. It’s an excellent way to break up the “he said,” “she said” parade in dialogue when you substitute action for dialogue tags. Gestures are also useful for revealing power dynamics (is a character “above” another, say standing on the stairs?), showing conflict through irony (“I do love you,” he picked up the knife and began slashing the peppers), subtext, and character (quirky actions make quirky characters).

Another trick that helps your dialogue is to break up the sentences. Use short sentences and avoid conjunctions like “and,” “but,” and “or.” This is a neat little hack that will make your dialogue sound more “out loud.”
