The Suicide Squad Comic Creator’s Cameo Confirmed By James Gunn

The new trailer for The Suicide Squad features a great Easter egg for eagle-eyed fans – a cameo by the original Suicide Squad comics creator, John Ostrander. The new film, directed by James Gunn, acts as both a loose sequel and soft reboot of David Ayer’s 2016 film, which featured an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, and Joel Kinnaman. A lot of those stars are returning in The Suicide Squad, which releases in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.

Like the 2016 film and the comics on which it was based, The Suicide Squad follows the escapades of Task Force X – a covert team of captured supervillains who perform dangerous missions in exchange for time commuted off their prison sentences. Gunn’s film includes a a number of classic DC characters, including Harley Quinn (Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), and The Thinker (Peter Capaldi). Staying true to the title of the movie, Gunn has said that not every character will reach the credits alive.

The new trailer for The Suicide Squad includes a well-deserved cameo appearance from Ostrander, the writer who created the modern version of the team for DC comics. James Gunn confirmed the cameo in a tweet, saying that “It only makes sense that the actual creator of #TheSuicideSquad is the one to put the bombs in their heads (and it helped that John Ostrander was actually a former actor).” Ostrander’s inclusion is a well-deserved show of respect, and a fun inclusion for longtime fans. Going off of the trailer, The Suicide Squad looks to be fully embracing its R rating, blending the whimsical style and offbeat comedy of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films with a darker, bloodier overall feel. The tone is perhaps most comparable to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool films. Hopefully, The Suicide Squad can find a similar level of success combining dark comedy with stylish action.

After the successful release of Wonder Woman 1984 and an overall positive response to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the future of the DCEU is looking brighter than it has in a long time. With highly anticipated films like the Robert Pattinson-led The Batman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash coming in 2022, there’s a lot for DC fans to look forward to. The Suicide Squad is the next theatrical release to drop for the franchise, and it looks like it has the potential to be one of the best DC films yet.
