re still in their infancy, and they’ll continue to become more accurate and convincing. Some of the applications of these technologies are genuinely entertaining — check out the Avengers singing the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” scene from Step Brothers — but ultimately, these algorithms are also now much easier for anyone to use for malicious ends. And without any recourse, deepfake’s harms might outweigh their slight entertainment value.

To be honest this story is a bit half-baked as I realize Zig is just too big of a topic to cover in some grans sweeping story. There are so many other topics I could cover but which would simply make this story excessively long. Instead I will attempt to write multiple smaller articles focused on different aspects of Zig in the future.

One may ask, why not build these kinds of things into the language? If you have ever used Lua, you will know some of the advantages of instead giving you the building blocks to create an object-oriented system rather than hardwiring it.

This roll-your-own approach can be very powerful. We have seen LISP programmers use this to build object-oriented programming systems in LISP, even creating multiple-dispatch systems akin to Julia.

It’s not a surprise America couldn’t stomach humanism. It was, if we tell its story properly, a slave state, which became an apartheid state. And so the ideals of supremacy, greed, and violence, cut both ways. Slave and blacks were dehumanized, inherently, of course. But what about the slave master who wouldn’t whip his slaves? Who wouldn’t punish the runaways with hanging? He’d be laughed at by his peers, too. So the ideals of dehumanization, greed, and violence, came to excise away the humanity of both oppressor and oppressed. And today in America, we don’t respect people who don’t display these attributes of cruelty, mockery, spite, punishment, and callousness — whether on the left or right. We respect the inhuman among us.

The creation of “modernity,” as intellectuals sometimes call it, was one of history’s greatest accomplishments. But what is this strange word, “modernity”? What does it mean to be “modern”? I don’t think that we need grand abstruse theories to really get it. I think it hinges on one simple, crucial, and deceptively beautiful insight.

And so when a society operates according to the logic that I am better than you when I exploit you — not that we are all pilgrims on the same road home — where can it end but collapse?

When I say “the modern world,” what do you think of? Probably a great city somewhere, with broad avenues, spacious parks, art and culture, old museums, people buzzing about, public transport thrumming.

And so when a society operates according to the logic that I am better than you when I exploit you — not that we are all pilgrims on the same road home — where can it end but collapse?

With Zig you could build C style object-oriented system, something more akin to Go or even object-oriented programming more similar to a more dynamic language like Objective-C.

Now think of America. People dying for a lack of insulin. Young people who can’t afford to start families of their own. The average person living perched right at the edge of ruin, one missed paycheck, one illness, one emergency away from disaster. Kids massacring one another at schools. Infants on trial. Politicians who proclaim “God is a white supremacist!” An endless and gruesome list of stuff that’s beginning to put the dark ages to shame.

Here’s what I think. American never joined the modern world. It’s the modern world’s first failed state. It became something like a weird, bizarre dystopia, replete with falling life expectancy, hand-to-mouth living, relentless and legendary cruelty, instead of a truly modern society instead. But why?

In Zig we use a similar approach described in more detail here by Nathan Michaels. Zig offers better features for doing this than C, so you see it use more to create generic iterators, allocators, readers, writers and many more things in Zig.

What happens to a society that doesn’t embrace humanism? It becomes inhuman. And that is exactly what we see in America today. The purpose of American life has become to dehumanize, to objectify, to nullify, to erase, to cancel, to subjugate. Whom? Everyone. We start with ourselves. We objectify ourselves. The dehumanization radiates outwards. Everyone’s our adversary. Life is a game — and if we bring everyone low, and we are the last ones left standing, we win. We have no obligations to anyone else, only egoistic duties to ourselves. We do not see people as beings suffering in just the way we are, with despair, angst, loneliness, distance, over death, mortality, time, decay, which lends beauty, urgency, and meaning, to every single moment of love, truth, and grace. We have never come to know ourselves at all, as beings with the truest and deepest kind of inherent worth, which is as inescapable as it is priceless.

To be honest this story is a bit half-baked as I realize Zig is just too big of a topic to cover in some grans sweeping story. There are so many other topics I could cover but which would simply make this story excessively long. Instead I will attempt to write multiple smaller articles focused on different aspects of Zig in the future.
