Drafting is one of the most crucial elements of a successful long-term franchise. Fueled by a series of great draft picks, the San Antonio Spurs went on to make the playoffs for a record-tying 22 seasons while winning five championships in the process. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Sacramento Kings are currently riding a 14-year playoff drought — the second longest in NBA history. Unsurprisingly, this analysis ranks them among the teams least successful at drafting.

Sure there has always been other statically typed languages such as Ada, Modula-2 etc. However these generally did not try to cater to people’s existing skillset, or could be used easily with existing C libraries.

In the more peaceful era of 2005, 30-year-old sales executive Vanessa Mitchell arrived in St. Osyth to view a house for sale. Number 14 Colchester Road is a former medieval jail known as “the Cage.” It famously housed the 13 St. Osyth witches, including Ursula Kemp, who was hanged for murdering her neighbors with black magic. “I remembered seeing the plaque outside,” Mitchell told me on a Skype call. “I don’t remember being scared of it.” She had grown up in the village and used to walk past the mustard-colored building on her way to school. “My earliest memories are just being fascinated by the house. It was just the kind of quirky home Mitchell desired — and a historical gem. She decided: “I’ve got to buy the house!”

One may ask, why not build these kinds of things into the language? If you have ever used Lua, you will know some of the advantages of instead giving you the building blocks to create an object-oriented system rather than hardwiring it.

To be honest this story is a bit half-baked as I realize Zig is just too big of a topic to cover in some grans sweeping story. There are so many other topics I could cover but which would simply make this story excessively long. Instead I will attempt to write multiple smaller articles focused on different aspects of Zig in the future.

In this analysis, I have created a metric that scores each draft pick by comparing them against the players taken after them (the full methodology is available at the end). After applying this over the last 10 years (the drafts from 2010 to 2019), we can now measure which teams have been successful in their drafting and what teams have not.

There has been languages such as D, but it has C level complexity which is probably not appealing to C developers. It also has initially required garbage collection which likely makes it unsuitable for many of the areas mentioned. You don’t want a garbage collector to kick in while you are trying to maintain a frame rate.

The results of this analysis also empirically validate the vital link between drafting success and winning. The relationship between team drafting scores and winning is strong and statistically significant — an increase of 0.1 in team draft score is associated with 3.7 more regular season wins in the last NBA season. Of the fourteen teams with an above average draft score, ten of them made the playoffs last year. Among the bottom five teams, none made the playoffs.

With Zig you could build C style object-oriented system, something more akin to Go or even object-oriented programming more similar to a more dynamic language like Objective-C.

I think one of the first real signs that there is an appetite for a modern incarnation of C and C is the rising popularity of Go and Rust. We see a lot of typical tools that was commonly written in C or C in the past now being written in Go or Rust. A plethora of command line tools e.g. are popping up, which have been written in either of these langauges. I cover some of these tools here. You see people attempt to write game engines in Rust.
