I work as a data developer/engineer by day and father of two 24/7. Whenever I have free time from these activities, I try to do something interesting to me. I had a data science field for some time in my backlog, but I couldn’t find a good use case to deep dive into it. The Focus area for me (is now) and was stream processing, Apache Spark, and other Big Data processing related things.

First of all, a corporate company is a great opportunity to grow as a data scientist. If you really love exactly what you are doing during your job, you maybe should simply extend your working hours. This will probably make a better impression in comparison to walking out of the office at exactly 5pm, go home and spend the evening with the same things you could have done equally if you stayed an hour longer at the office.

This is not a call that you should work longer and longer for your company, this is simply the suggestion to choose your side projects wisely. Consider the example that your position requires you to develop and evaluate different neural network parameterizations and you really enjoy to work on it. In my opinion the better choice to work on these topics is to find an even better neural network for the use case at your company instead of developing and solving a different use case with the same set of methods by yourself.

Working on the same topics in private as you are working on at your company can be very problematic, which brings me to my second point: Do not use internal company’s information for your private projects! Often you are using for private projects open source version management tools as git and even if you do not, I am pretty sure that you are probably not allowed to apply internal developed models of your company in a private way, or even worse use company internal data for your private projects.

SetState is useful in only local scope. If a widget is changing it’s own state, then SetState is 100% what you want to use, without worrying about anything else. For instance, perhaps you’re storing if a switch is toggled on, or off — or maybe you’re storing what a text field has typed into it. SetState in unbeatable for local scope, and you really shouldn’t consider any other packages.

Sometimes, state management monopoly is good; in React, there’s really only one or two state management solutions that are seen regularly. As the wild beast that 2020 was draws to a close, there seemed to be a new state management solution every month. Here’s a list of where each solution shines, so you can be confident you picked the best state management solutions for your needs.

But I still love the Mac experience, macOS and Mac software too much to switch to another system. I will just have to suck it up and have cute little Mac box with a bunch of cables sticking out of it.

However, I think I made my point clear: side projects will improve your data science skills, since you use your free time enhancing your weaknesses. Choose your side projects wisely and enjoy them.

Keep in mind that this is the first legit time I tried to make some predictions. I’m not doing anything production-grade, and this post is most likely to be useful for new kids on the Data Science block (explorers or just starting). Learn from my mistakes as well!

e you set the font face, font size, color schemes, support for multiple tabs. Examples for terminal emulators are GNOME terminal, Konsole on KDE, Terminator, and XTerm. On Linux, I recommend keeping the default. On Windows, the Windows Terminal is awesome. On Mac, I’ve heard good things about iTerm 2.

So commit to personal data science projects outside your job only if you truly want to accomplish them. If you do not feel like doing so that is totally fine. I am sure your corporate job will provide you the opportunity to grow anyway. But if you want to have a slight boost and have a great project idea, simply go for it!

I have a statistical background, though never in my life, I’ve worked with statistics. I got rusty; I mean, short fragments exist about what is MSE, AUC, etc., but that is it. I have to start almost from 0 if I’d want to progress further (statistical courses I took in University were 10 years ago).

These computers really appealed to professionals and hobbyists alike, as they were really easy to open and add things. I would still have loved the ability to add extra hard drives, specialized cards, internal DVD burners etc. But sadly Apple has never showed much love towards this segment of users.
