All the while I watched food being thrown away, offered to Gods, pictures of hungry poor people all around the world played in my head. If Gods are as great and loving as people portray them to be, wouldn’t they prefer the food to go to their beloved humans?

Rituals everyone does but not understand. The answer I got when I inquired about the purpose of the ritual? Because it had been taught and passed down for generation. I understand cultures need to be preserved. But not all practices should be retained. The cruel ones needed to be taken out.

Worse, I started to feel bad for having these questions and thoughts about Gods and I feared repercussions as I had been told that if I don’t worship the Gods, if I anger them in any way, bad luck would befall me.

My parents would take us to temples to chant. Many of the chantings we had attended started at 9 AM and ended at 7 PM. The temples even provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I kid you not.

European regulators expressed skepticism about the “hasty” U.K. approval. British researchers, however, started looking at Pfizer’s data in October in a process called a “rolling review,” which gave them a headstart on their analyses. The approval of the vaccine in the U.K. puts pressure on the United States (and other Western countries) to follow suit. Pfizer has applied for emergency use authorization in the United States, and Moderna did the same this week (more on that below). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to make a decision on the Pfizer vaccine after an advisory panel meets on December 10, and a second panel will meet to assess the Moderna vaccine on December 17.

The study, which hasn’t started recruiting yet, will involve 3,000 teens: Half will get two doses of the vaccine, one month apart, and the other half will get a placebo. This is important because vaccines can’t be administered to kids unless companies provide safety and efficacy data on this age group. Pfizer is also running tests on this age group, and AstraZeneca has done the same, though not in the United States.

Buckets of vermicelli, snacks, cooking ingredients, and other staple food like rice were being thrown into the fire. Buckets. There must have been a few kilos of good food gone into the fire pit as I sat in the front row of the congregation room, staring at the big screen (the fire pit was being recorded outside and projected inside) in front of me, absolutely horrified.

I didn’t have any issue following instructions and doing what was asked of me. I was still trying to find my identity and I didn’t give religion much thought. My parents said Buddhism is our religion, all the rituals and practices will keep us away from harm and help us prosper and there’s that.

I watched in horror as big buckets of food were being fed into the fire. I was attending a Buddhist praying event with my family and we had come to the part where we were sending offerings to the Gods through fire.

The chanting pretty much ended for me when I presented my argument to my wise mother who thought if I have zero interest to learn, I can just walk away (thank God for parents who are willing to listen to the voice of reason).

On Thursday, Facebook announced that it would “start removing false claims about these vaccines that have been debunked by public health experts on Facebook and Instagram” in its effort to keep people safe and informed about the coronavirus. Facebook has long been a hub for people to share vaccine misinformation, and the social media giant has been criticized for not effectively regulating this content despite its potential for public harm. It has attempted to regulate anti-vaccination content and other Covid-19 misinformation in the past by limiting its reach rather than removing it, but as OneZero has pointed out, this content continued to circulate in private groups and messages.

I constantly warred with myself. I don’t want to question these powerful beings who — my parents had told me — have protected me since I took my first breath. At the same time, I couldn’t rid myself of the questions.

Following close on Pfizer’s heels, Moderna said on Monday that it applied for FDA emergency use authorization and released a trove of data showing that its vaccine is 94.1% effective. If it’s approved (and the aforementioned advisory panel gives its blessing), it can roll out in the United States as early as December 21. As Jesse Smith wrote in the Coronavirus Blog, the results reveal that “none of the vaccinated group participants contracted severe forms of Covid-19” — in other words, that it’s 100% effective against severe cases.
