It was the peak of World War II as the Battle of Britain raged across the skies of Europe.
The Luftwaffe, the German Air Force, ruled the skies over the British channel. The Royal Air Force (RAF) lagged initially but caught up with Luftwaffe in the latter part of the war. During this intermediate period, the Royal Air Force needed a temporary solution to keep the Luftwaffe in check and attack Germany, Italy, and German-occupied areas. The aircraft needs to be light and cheap, thus was born Mosquito.

The Royal Air Force was far behind the Luftwaffe in some areas when World War II started.
The Nazi government flooded the Luftwaffe with money for development. Herman Göring, one of the best known Nazi Party leaders, headed the Luftwaffe.
Göring was a World War I veteran who flew with the legendary Red Barron in the famous Flying Circus squadron. Private companies like Junkers, Telefunken, etc., in Germany received huge incentives to develop new technologies for the Luftwaffe.
The RAF lacked the necessary funding until the war was already at its shores. The RAF was able to catch up with the Luftwaffe with fighters such as the Spitfires and Hurricanes, but their production was slow.
The RAF’s commanders looked for a stop-gap solution to buy it some time until they acquired enough modern aircraft. The solution was the Mosquito.
The Birth of the Mosquito:

The RAF and British furniture manufacturers used wood to make the Mosquito aircraft. Yes, you read it right, it is wood.
What the Mosquito lacked in armor capacity, it made up in speed. As it was lightweight, the Mosquito was faster and more maneuverable than any Luftwaffe fighter.
The Mosquito can carry small bombs, so it doubled up as a fighter and a bomber. As the manufacturing process was simple, the RAF was able to mass-produce them.
Mosquitos were able to fly low inside German territories and were able fly under German Radar. Mosquitos attacked many Luftwaffe airfields at night. They were quick and agile and installed terror in the minds and hearts of the German air crews. The Mosquitos came to the rescue of the RAF during its darkest hour.
The attack on the Berlin radio station:
The Nazi Propaganda Ministry scheduled a speech by Herman Göring to the German nation over a Berlin radio station on January 30, 1943.
RAF commanders planned an attack on the radio station to interrupt the show and embarrass Göring. As the program was about to be aired, RAF Mosquitos dropped bombs in radio station’s vicinity.
The audience clearly heard the bombs explode during transmission. Consequently, Nazi propagandists canceled Herman Göring’s speech.
The Mosquito attack became an massive embarrassment for the Nazi Party because it showed the capitol of the 1,000 year Reich was under aerial attack by the enemy. By bombing Berlin, the British demonstrated that the Allies not the Axis controlled the air over Europe.
Attack on Amiens prison:

The Gestapo held French resistance prisoners in the Amiens prison in France. February 18, 1944, was set as the date to execute some of the Resistance fighters.
RAF commanders decided to bomb the jail to liberate the prisoners and humiliate the Gestapo. 12 Mosquitos flew in from Britain to attack the prison, and the mission was successful. Many French resistance fighters escaped from the prison. Some of escapees who helped deceive the German forces during the D-Day landings in June 1944.
Aiding the Dutch Resistance:

The Gestapo (German secret police) kept Dutch resistance fighters’ records in its office in Aarhus.
The RAF’s commanders received a request from the Dutch resistance movement to bomb the building and burn the documents. Mosquitos from the RAF flew to October 31, 1944, and mistakenly bombed a nearby school.
The second wave of Mosquitos hit the right building. The mission was a success. The accidental bombing of a Dutch school created a black mark for RAF during its finest hours.
Pathfinders and the Battle of Britain:

The most significant use of Mosquito was its usage as pathfinders. When a German city is selected for bombing by RAF commanders, Mosquitos are sent as the first wave to drop markers all along the way.
The RAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, and US Army Air Force bombers in the second wave followed these markers, and dropped bombs on the city. This strategy highly increased the efficiency of Allied bombing attacks. Mosquitos also formed a bulk of British air defense against Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain.
Though Mosquitos helped the RAF a lot, it was a dying breed. Advanced fighters such as the Spitfire and later jet-powered aircraft made Mosquitos obsolete.
In 1946 the last Mosquito was manufactured. Though Mosquitos were the simplest of designs, it changed the course of world history
