Coronavirus cases are not falling in England despite lockdown measures, a leading London expert has warned, after a major new study found “worrying suggestions of a recent uptick in infections”.

Professor Paul Elliot, chair in epidemiology at Imperial College London, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning that the country had seen a “levelling off, or even a small rise" in cases. 

He said the React study, which tested swabs of almost 145,000 people – including those not showing Covid-19 symptoms – revealed that "we are not seeing the decline that we really need to see given the pressure on the NHS and the very high levels of the virus in the population.”

It comes after the UK recorded its deadliest day of the pandemic so far, with 1,820 deaths confirmed on Wednesday. Boris Johnson described the figures as “appalling” as he warned there would be more “tough weeks to come”.

“We face a long and difficult couple of months and we will all need to pull together to support each other and play our part in following lockdown restrictions," said Ms Noakes.

“So far more people in the borough have now died in January than either November or December and sadly deaths continue to increase.

“We anticipate that pressure on hospitals will only get more intense over the next weeks.”

According to the latest weekly figures, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Telford and Wrekin was around 6% below a peak experienced last week.

The latest figures on the number of Covid vaccines administered in Scotland are in:
Public Health Scotland said 334,871 people had received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine by 8.30am on Thursday January 21, an increase of 24,962 from the previous day.

It added that 4,466 people have received the second dose, an increase of 296.

Antibody drug ‘can prevent Covid-19 illness in nursing homes’
Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has said its Covid-19 antibody drug can prevent illness in residents and staff at nursing homes and other long-term care locations.

It is the first major study to show such a treatment may prevent disease.

Residents and staff who got the drug had up to a 57 per cent lower risk of getting Covid-19 compared with others at the same facility who got a placebo, the company said.

Among nursing home residents only, the risk was reduced by up to 80 per cent.

The study involved more than 1,000 residents and staff at nursing homes and other long-term care locations.

The research was conducted with the National Institutes of Health.

Results were released in a press release and the company said it would publish results in a journal soon.

The Food and Drug Administration in November allowed emergency use of Lilly’s antibody drug as a treatment for mild or moderate cases of Covid-19 that do not require hospital admission.

It is a one-time treatment given through an IV.

Lilly said it will seek expansion of that authorisation to include using the drug to prevent and treat Covid-19 in long-term care facilities.

Nursing homes and other long-term care locations have been hard hit by the pandemic.

In the US, they account for less than one per cent of the population, but nearly 40 per cent of deaths from Covid-19.

These long-term care locations have been given priority to vaccinate residents and staff with recently authorised Covid-19 vaccines.

Calls for quarantine hotels to protect against Covid variants
Quarantine hotels should be introduced for international arrivals to combat “massively more dangerous” new coronavirus strains, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.

The senior Conservative MP joined Labour on Friday in calling for the Government to increase border protections over fears vaccines may be less effective on novel variants.

Ministers are considering forcing new arrivals to the UK to complete their isolation periods in hotels but it is understood no decision to approve the proposal has been made.

Mr Hunt, the chairman of the Health Select Committee, told the Commons: “If we’re going to bring down the horrific death rates that we’re now seeing, should we not be securing our borders with quarantine hotels, ending household mixing outside bubbles and following Germany in mandating FFP2 masks in shops and on public transport to give better protection to wearers?”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he had been advised that the current guidelines on protective equipment were “right and appropriate” and said “very significant measures” were in place for international travel.

“We remain vigilant on what we need to do to guard against new variants coming in from abroad,” he added.

“The new variants do change this question because it’s not just about ensuring we don’t get extra cases coming in from abroad … it’s making sure new variants that might not be dealt with as effectively by the vaccine don’t arrive and stopping them from coming.”

Government sources said no decision on quarantine hotels had been made yet, and expected them to be discussed at a meeting of the Covid-O committee on Friday or Monday.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he was not against the idea of hotels being used as quarantine facilities but that the key issue was checks taking place on whether arrivals were abiding by the current quarantine rules.

“The most important thing is not where somebody is located but are we checking, is the system really working, and that’s been the structural flaw since the start,” he told reporters.

“Wherever people go are they being checked on, that’s the critical question. If that works better in hotels then so be it. I don’t stand or fall on hotels, I stand or fall on how well the system works.”

On Monday, the Government closed the travel corridors scheme that exempted arrivals from having to quarantine if they arrived from countries deemed safe.

Now all international arrivals must test negative for coronavirus up to 72 hours before departure, and self-isolate for up to 10 days.
