What’s your formal education and in what field. Is it a well-known institution? For more recent grads, I’ll also look at their GPA and whether they received any excellence awards or honors such as making the Rector’s or Dean’s list. Since Data Science is a wide-open field without any standardized tests or required knowledge, people can enter the field in various methods. In my last blog, I wrote about the 3 main paths taken into the field and based on your education and timing, I’ll figure out which one you probably took. Hence, the timing helps understand your story — how and when did you transition into data science. If you don’t have any formal education in data science, that’s fine, but you need to either demonstrate a track record of work in the field and/or advanced degrees in similar fields.

They mix languages with tools, and in the worst cases with soft skills — saying your ‘4.5 stars’ at Leadership isn’t helpful. As a strong believer in a growth mentality, claiming to max out a skill (especially a harder to quantify and harder to master soft skill) feels very presumptuous.

We don’t connect to his story because we’ve been in his shoes, we connect to it because he tells his story through themes that we can all relate to. We’ve all been a scared kid being threatened by a bully or a young adult trying to find our way in the world or a grown-up, struggling to navigate bureaucracy. Persuasion isn’t about telling people how you feel, it’s about helping them to see your perspective from their point of view. That’s the principle behind all good storytelling. And with Unforgiven, Dave Chappelle has proven that he’s a master of it.

Few countries have escaped the grasps of pandemic outbreaks, yet many have readily forgotten the realities of these health crises. The United States had the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, yet disbanded dedicated pandemic response teams in 2018. Conversely, African countries retained the health systems used for previous pandemics.

To be clear, I don’t disagree with Dave here. Not that it would mean anything if I did. I don’t know anything about Dave Chappelle or contract law or about having an iconic, world-renowned TV show that bears my name. Neither do any of us.

For example, Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, has over 200 million people and confirmed more than 66,000 Covid-19 cases and 1,160 fatalities as of November 2020. The United States, on the other hand, has 330 million people and confirmed more than 12.5 million Covid-19 cases and 260,000 deaths as of November 2020.

“[The African] system of health already is inclined more toward these communicable diseases as opposed to a lot of other countries,” explains Javed Ali, MD, the International Medical Corps director of emergency response, Africa region. He adds that aspects of surveillance, reporting, and data collection are ingrained in many aspects of primary health care in a way that is not necessarily as common in the United States.

I’ve also seen this approach abused even further by taking the subjective measures and turning them into a pie chart (30% python, 10% team-player, etc). While this was probably supposed to be a creative way to stand out, it demonstrates a lack of basic understanding behind the concepts of different charts.

While the U.S. has floundered, other countries have succeeded. Many have praised the response from countries like New Zealand and Singapore, but other countries, particularly in Africa, have done well, too.

What I do know, is that Dave Chappelle is worth an estimated $50 million, and yet he persuaded a crowd of ordinary people, who paid their hard-earned money to see him, that they should refuse to watch his show unless he gets paid more than his contract told him he would. He sat on stage and told the story of a multi-million dollar deal, that made him fewer millions than he hoped, and managed not to sound like an asshole.

The story isn’t about Dave Chappelle the superstar, it’s about the fourteen-year-old boy that we were introduced to in the first act. We’re being asked to do our part to help that child get back what was taken from him. What’s refusing to watch a TV show compared to that?

“Much of the success was attributable to the public health infrastructure that had been put in place before now. The emergency coordination structures— from the national to the state and below—were already there,” explains Chizoba Wonodi, MD, MPH, DrPH, director of Nigeria programs at the Johns Hopkins’ International Vaccine Access Center.

I’ve seen some beautiful CVs (I’ve saved a few of these for personal inspiration) but I’ve also received text files (.txt) that lack any formatting. Working on your CV can be a pain, and if you’ve chosen data science as your endeavor there’s a good chance you don’t enjoy creating aesthetic designs in your spare time. Without going overboard, you do want to look for a nice template that enables you to get everything across in limited space. Use the space wisely — it’s useful to split the page and highlight specific sections that don’t fall under the chronological work/education experience. This can include the tech stack you’re familiar with, a list of self-projects, links to your github or blog and others. A few simple icons can also help with emphasizing section headers. Many candidates use 1–5 stars or bar charts next to each language/tool they are familiar with. Personally, I’m not a big fan of this approach for several reasons:
