If we were to try and fit the same “scrolling height” onto these phones, then we’d end up with some unused space which is not optimal. Obviously it’s a bit exaggerated here, as some of these phones have different aspect ratios — it just means to show a general principle.

There were some arguments that “people don’t scroll”, which in modern times sounds a little bit silly (given the fact that we scroll 300meters on average every single day).

Of course Swift UI and all the other advancements in coding make it a little bit simpler, but at the design phase, we still want to see how it’s going to look like on a larger device. We also use Sketch Mirror quite a lot to preview it on those devices, so this makes us do a bit more work than we want to.

If we consider raw text data, the human eye can analyze some points. But if we try to build a mechanism in programming using Python to analyze and extract maximum information from the text data.

The answer is, it depends. In the case of content consumption, the UI can stay relatively the same size, while the content itself can be enlarged and in much higher quality (in pixels).

Above you can see an example design of an app we’re currently building at HYPE4. As you can see it’s not ideal, as especially the top and bottom spacing require adjustments between the phones to look right. On some phones the main button requires scrolling, so we’ll have to adjust the entire card and font-sizes for these devices to still manage and fit it. (That happens in development)

Also, some up or down-scaling can lead to bad anti-aliasing in very thin lines as it’s all based on pixel approximation, so if you’re using very thin/light fonts, then you may be missing some legibility.

But it may impact some e-commerce projects where it was carefully created to fit as much relevant information AND a BUY NOW button on one screen. Sure, we can create an overlay button, but that doesn’t solve the problem of cutting out information on specific phones.

Up until this point we designed for the iPhone X viewport of 375 x 812 and for the larger 414x896. It covered the most individual phones, and the developers adjusted the layout to fit more content (or just be larger) on the few other devices.

Natural Language processing comes under the umbrella of the Artificial Intelligence domain. All computers are good with numerical data to do processing, this class of section is dealing with text data to analyze different languages in this world.

The fold is a pretty old concept of an invisible line that separates what we normally see on one screen (without scrolling) and the rest of the design. The notion is that all the most important elements should be “above the fold” for easier access.

So I guess that for e-commerce it may actually be easier to test experiences by just upscaling that same design to be bigger, as that will give us a more consistent view of what people are looking at across all the devices.

Apple solved this problem after iOS 7 by introducing bolder / thicker font weights and getting rid of most of the “light” fonts. But some designers (and even more product owners) like those light fonts as they understand them as “minimal” and “good design” for some reason.
