Weather Leaves Millions in Texas Without Power

WINTER WEATHER ACROSS the central and eastern U.S. has been blamed for multiple deaths and left millions without power.

As of Tuesday morning, over 4.4 million people in Texas did not have power. More than 1 million of those outages were in the Houston area, according to Poweroutage.us. Multiple deaths related to the weather have been documented across several states, including a woman and girl who died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Houston after running a car in an attached garage while the home was without power, according to police.

At least seven states have issued emergency declarations due to the weather: Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas. Close to half of the U.S. population was under some sort of winter advisory on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

"The major winter storm responsible for producing significant snow and ice accumulations in parts of the central and eastern U.S. the last couple days is making a beeline for eastern Canada, but not before it causes heavy snow and freezing rain in parts of the eastern Great Lakes and New England," the National Weather Service said in a post on Tuesday.

The service said that the eastern Great Lake and northern New England could see several more inches of snow.

Intense weather was also documented in North Carolina, where a tornado early Tuesday morning led to at least three deaths.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 52 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered.

President Joe Biden set a goal to reach 100 million vaccine doses administered in his first 100 days. Biden is over halfway to that goal with over two months left in his timeline. While the winter weather poses a setback, Biden tweeted Tuesday that he believes he will exceed his goal.

"Before I took office, I set a big goal of administering 100 million shots in the first 100 days," Biden tweeted. "With the progress we're making I believe we'll not only reach that, we'll break it."

Coronavirus vaccine shipments were delayed to Florida and Texas, and vaccination appointments were expected to be canceled again on Tuesday in Houston and Austin. Nevada was informed that shipments could be delayed, and Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Monday canceled the state's mass vaccination events through Friday.
