Whenever you execute the history command you’ll see a number in front of each line. You can execute the same command aga

Not only can the history command be used to take a look at all the commands that have been run. You can also use the history command to quickly execute one of these prior executed commands again.

This can be useful when downloading a database backup from the server, for example. If you want to upload something from your machine to the remote host you switch around the parameters.

This command can be useful in several scenarios. One of those scenarios is if you want to check which processes are running at a certain port. In order to do so you’ve got to specify the -i option. Let’s take a look at the example below, where we check which processes are running on port 22 — which is the port for SSH.

In this example, derk is the user and 127.0.0.1 is the host. The address of the host is followed by a colon. After the colon, you specify the path to the file that needs to be copied. The second argument is the destination which in this case is a folder on your own machine. The result of this command is that file.txt gets copied from the server to your local machine’s ~/destination folder.

The history command keeps a list of all the other commands that have been run from the current terminal session. This is what the output of the history command looks like.

The lsof command lists all open files. The syntax is simple, all you have to is type lsof. In the absence of any options, this command will list all open files belonging to all the active processes.

The command is fairly straightforward and works just like the cp command. The only difference is that you can copy files to other hosts with scp which isn’t possible with the normal cp command.

The tail command often gets used for watching a log file. This is due to the fact that the tail command has got an -f option, which stands for “follow”, that allows you to watch a file. This option will output appended data as the file grows. This means that log entries that get appended to the file will be displayed immediately.

Every developer knows that cd is one of the most frequently used commands on the Linux command line. This command probably doesn’t need any further explanation. However, a lot of developers don’t know about a great option that comes with the cd command: the hyphen.

The diff command stands for difference and allows you to compare files line by line. Let’s say we have two files that both contain a list of the continents. The only difference between those files is the order that the continents are placed in.

Scp stands for secure copy and allows you to copy files between hosts on a network. One way you can use scp is to copy a file from your machine to a remote server or vice versa. Scp works with SSH.

When we would do a diff between these two files we would get the following output. Make sure to add the -c option. This option outputs the difference in context mode which makes the output much more readable.

programmers use Python code (and vice-versa), but also supports interoperability with C, R, Java, and almost every major programming language. This versatility would certainly give the language a good boost and increase its chances of a quick adoption among data scientists.

If you’ve ever worked with version control chances are you’ve used a diff command before. When using Git, for example. This command allows you to see the changes that you’ve made to a certain file.

The reason locate is so fast is because it doesn’t read the file system for the searched file or directory name. Instead, it refers to a database to find what the user is looking for and based on that search, produces its output.
