We all know about dis- and misinformation, how it has spread on social media, and how social media exacerbates polarisation through echo chambers. But the flip-side of these content platforms is that they make it easier for authoritative, intelligent communicators to forge a career in an industry that would’ve either corporatised them or chewed them up and spat them out just a decade or so ago.

But governments can also have an important role to play. Clearly, state-run and funded media is not the way to go: it is simply too constrained to provide the kind of quality news that we want. But there might be a mixed approach — something in between nationalised media and private media.

Although Scott could not be reached for an interview (requests were made through multiple representatives, including her book agent, her divorce lawyer, and her former employees), interviews with friends, schoolmates, instructors, associates, and former co-workers of Scott’s, along with previously unreported public documents, reveal her complicated relationship with money, tracing back to the financial upheaval her family experienced while she was a teenager. The quiet, literary, 50-year-old billionaire, who overnight became one of the most influential philanthropists in the world, and who set a new bar for giving, has learned from experience what money can accomplish — and what it can’t.

l has built up a large audience, then it will be much easier to get a comparable level of views compared to a smaller channel. Some of this may reflect more experience leading to better videos, but I didn’t want to discount potentially high-quality videos from smaller channels. A 100,000 view video from a channel with 10,000 subscribers is probably better than a 100,000 view video from a 1 million subscriber channel.

Social media and open platforms for content have already allowed thousands of great journalists to go it alone and make enough money to sustain themselves and fund their work. The news at the moment is pretty horrible at anything other than surface-level reporting and clickbait. But we are seeing shifting dynamics in the industry, and there may be a way forward even within the profit-driven world.

Scott gave 116 grants, all at once, with very few strings attached, to mostly small organizations. They didn’t have to hit metrics she named; they didn’t have to create programs she favored.
