A father and son combo fintech, Jeff Cruttendan ran the investment arm of popular trading platform E-trade. Together with his son Walter Cruttendan, he started Acorns in 2012 with a simple idea.

jQuery which was initially released in 2006 makes DOM traversal and event handling easier. Its animations module did great work before all popular browsers started implementing pure CSS animations. Besides, jQuery AJAX requests powered numerous web applications on the internet.

However, it is exciting to forecast what startups are about to hit this status, especially with all the turmoil that has happened in 2020. It is still a huge achievement for any startup and should still be celebrated. In this list, I look at the five ‘almost’ unicorns that will most likely hit the status in 2021.

As of early 2020, Acorns has had 6.8 million users, up from 4.6 million in 2019. Since 2012, Acorns has had 12 rounds of funding, according to Crunchbase, and has raised over 207 million dollars.

Before the modern reusable-component concept, the widget concept was the key approach to implement a well-structured UI library. Each widget could be rendered on the web browser by using a placeholder DOM element and a JavaScript function call to the UI library. Many web sites and web applications used jQuery UI along with jQuery to include modernized UI elements with their products. jQuery UI gained so much reputation because the native input elements weren’t user friendly at that time.

The idea was to round up people’s spare change from debit or credit card purchases and automatically invest them via the application. Investments are automatically made into one to five portfolios, each carrying different levels of risk. Like Robinhood, it is heavily focused on the millennial market, appealing to the younger generation of new investors with easy UI and UX and minimal effort.

Nowadays we can read any popular document format within the web browser. Whereas, we all can remember that there was a time where we downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader to open a PDF file that was downloaded via the internet. Old web sites even asked users to install external software to view PDF files. PDF.js which was initially developed by Mozilla introduced a way to read PDF documents within the web browser by rendering the content of PDF to the DOM.

A decade ago JavaScript-based libraries came to make these DOM manipulations easier by introducing some nice approaches to connect the DOM and data. However, even at that stage, monolithic web applications were popular. Web applications used AJAX requests to get data along with HTML in a stateful manner. Thereafter, MVVM concept based front-end modern frameworks were born. Those front-end frameworks got a huge push with the stateless architecture. For example, with the REStful API model.

This library is still very popular for date parsing, formatting, and manipulation. It was initially released in 2011, and millions of projects used it successfully. Earlier, Moment.js offered a simple way of date manipulation and also offered very useful features such as relative time calculation and duration calculation. However, this project is not recommended by its developers right now by marking it as a legacy product due to the drawbacks such as large bundle size compared to alternatives and mutability.

Angular.js is a front-end framework that can be used to build single-page web applications known as SPA. This project was released exactly 10 years ago and was able to uplift data binding methods and dynamic HTML templates into the next level by letting developers make highly dynamic applications. Nowadays almost all front-end frameworks motivate everyone to separate front-end development from back-end development. Whereas, Angular.js can be easily used to build both: isolated user interfaces (SPA) and MVC architecture based monolithic applications. In other words, Angular.js can be easily used with pages that are generated by PHP, C# .NET, Java, etc.

The main reason behind the popularity of jQuery is that it can be easily used with any type of web application regardless of what technology is used for building a particular web application. Indeed, nowadays jQuery is still being used because it doesn’t matter which front-end framework is used, jQuery will work fine.

However, looking at all the unicorns in the market, most of them have reached their valuation from finding product-market-fit for their product. Each startup has had a unique way of growing from bootstrapping to VC funding and some even through crowdfunding.

There were various sorts of UI elements for building user-friendly web applications such as dialog boxes, date pickers, tooltips, menus, etc. Besides, jQuery UI had nice themes and it had a custom theme builder tool too. This project appeared around one year after the release of jQuery. Thereafter, well known proprietary alternatives such as Kendo UI were introduced for building web applications.

Many of these entrepreneurs never focused on becoming a unicorn but rather solving an actual real-world problem. After all, that shouldn’t be the reason why you become an entrepreneur in the first place.
