Working for a startup at the beginning of your career when you’re single and don’t have many responsibilities is far more fun, and you get to try on a bunch of different hats to see where your passion lies.
Try out new roles in your current position to gauge your interest level without taking too big of a plunge. You’ll be incredibly marketable, having in-depth knowledge of two specialties, and get the opportunity to learn and grow in your career.
If the agency has multiple locations, you may have various ladders to choose from and could hop from one to the next while remaining with the same agency. While waiting to move up into a managerial role, be sure to learn as much as you can about leadership and how you would want to manage a team.
DesignOps could be considered role hopping, but it is a beast of its own in my mind, and it takes a unique skill set and personality. A design operations role “creates standardized systems and services to free up designers so they can concentrate on design work, instead of things like budgeting and scheduling,” as defined in Invision’s DesignOps Handbook.
Another way to go about your career path is to become an industry SME (subject matter expert). You will continue to be marketable as you move from company to company because you already have so much background knowledge coming in. You can work on moving up the rungs as you shift around, but as I mentioned earlier, lateral moves aren’t the worst. You will most likely be in the workforce for about 45 years, and we’re on this earth to enjoy our lives; we don’t always have to be in such a hurry to move up quickly.
If you are a purple-striped zebra, design managers are looking for you because design teams everywhere genuinely need your help. If your stripes haven’t fully developed, test out some design processes in your current role and see how your team could leverage them to create a more mature design org.
The more job descriptions I read, the more it seems that companies want a designer who is also a researcher, copywriter, developer, and project manager all in one. While I highly advise against these roles (this topic could be a whole article of my ranting), when you have multiple skill sets, you are more marketable. Just avoid becoming a jack of all trades, master of none.
Some industries tend to be concentrated in specific cities, which might require a move to get into a new industry. If that’s not an option, there may be a remote opportunity in another industry. 2020 may be a hot mess, but if it’s brought us anything positive, telework options are definitely on the list.
With this path, find an industry you’re passionate about and set forth learning and growing. If you’re ambitious and interested in becoming a CEO one day, this route is the path most traveled.

atched a video game controller out of his brother’s hands and took over his game, leaving his little brother crying and babbling on about how much he hates being home. I walked into the living room to see what the commotion was about, and without looking up, my oldest son gave a monotonous, well-rehearsed, meaningless, “I’m sorry, I won’t do it again.” His eyes never left the screen.Anywhere on your career path after your junior design work, you could take the plunge to work for yourself and feel the wind of autonomy beneath your wings. Make sure to research what freelancing is really like before taking it on full time. There’s a lot to learn about quoting projects, client boundaries, over-communication, finding clients, and so on.
The number of specialties within UX seems to grow by the day, so dabbling in something new is always available. For example, I’m an interaction designer traditionally, but I find prototyping and animation work fun. My design coworkers have been talented at digging into data/analytics, and some were great at coming up with research questions and creating user tests. Even if you don’t want to make a role switch, there’s always great value in broadening your knowledge base.
While you would technically be considered an in-house designer working for a startup, it’s also like doing all the roles at once like a freelancer and living the agency life of never leaving the office and wearing flip-flops. Sometimes you’re even choosing your title at a startup, so there are no rungs of the ladder to climb. At an interview, when you ask the traditional “what would my opportunity for growth be in this role?” the answer would be very optimistic, “the sky is the limit!” Startups can be invigorating if you’re passionate about the product or service but don’t hope for much of a life outside of work. Time is of the essence, and money is in short supply, so everything has to be very fast-paced.
If you got into an industry you’re not digging, maybe it’s time to switch it up. When you have a passion for your company, you will do your job so much better. This direction can be perfect for the restless designer, always looking for a new challenge. Hopping around a bit also allows you to broaden your skillset, so take some time to think about what industry fires you up.
As a naturally anxious person, this choice puts me on edge, but it’s an important one to note. If you have the courage, portfolio, network, and a self-motivating personality, this is an exciting option. Freelance could be a valuable part of your career path if you need a break from the 9–5, are still developing your skills, or need a change of pace.
