When asked by podcast host Cathy Heller for suggestions for how to stop overthinking so much, Malcolm immediately shared a piece of advice he learned from one of his heroes: Albert O. Hirschmann.

Running the clocks at high frequencies for too long tends to make them overheat. I don’t know how the system would respond to this (hopefully it would down-clock them or shut down the system automatically before there were serious problems), but I don’t really want to find out.

“Anyone with a feeling for nature — a deeper sensitivity — will find it all gives pleasure. Even what seems inadvertent. He’ll find the jaws of live animals as beautiful as painted ones or sculptures. He’ll look calmly at the distinct beauty of old age in men, women, and at the loveliness of children. And other things like that will call out to him constantly — things unnoticed by others. Things seen only by those at home with Nature and its works.”

After locking the clocks, I had everything in place: a system that could reproduce my startup situation with reliable consistency, and a simple command-line I could execute that would return a stream of results. I was able to copy the results, paste them into a spreadsheet, and analyze them (by comparing my startup averages to various before/after situations I wanted to experiment with).

Evening reflection continues from the reflection of the morning. The Stoics believed in putting each day up for review, in order to continually be better people and to live a better life.

Reading can provide the moments of stillness mentioned above. Reading will nourish your mind, and provide respite in your busy days. Reading will also enable you to grow as a person — by reflecting on the discoveries made by others and contemplating the discoveries still to come. Never stop growing. Always find time for reading in your day.

For the past few years, those decorations have included a Black Santa Claus — something his neighbors in North Little Rock, Arkansas, have complimented him on. And then there’s the racist-ass grinch who sent him an anonymous letter from a White Santa this year to complain about it. “You should not try to deceive children into believing that I am a Negro,” said the letter. “You being jealous of my race is no excuse for your dishonesty.” Beyond the very strong Megyn Kelly in 2013 vibes, we’ve got a few thoughts about this. First off: Negro?! What year does this vigilante Santa think it is? Second: We like to think we’re imaginative people, but “being jealous of White people living in Arkansas” is a concept that has quite literally never occurred to us, and we’re guessing we’re not alone. If there’s a bright side to this story, it’s that Black Santas are reportedly proliferating throughout North Little Rock as people decorate in solidarity with Kennedy. Maybe once we settle this debate, we can finally take on the fable of White Jesus. (CNN)
