6 European Countries Stop AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine

Denmark Temporarily Discontinues Use of AstraZeneca Vaccine The Danish government hastemporarily suspended the use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine due to reports of blood clots in some people who received it. This decision will be reviewed two weeks later.

"The use of the vaccine will be suspended until further notice," said the official government statement quoted from Euro News, Thursday, March 11, 2021.

Danish Health Authority Director General Soren Brostrom said the decision to suspend the AstraZeneca vaccine was not an easy thing. The reason is that currently Denmark needs all the vaccine doses that can be obtained

The suspension of the vaccine came after Austria took action after the death of a woman from blood clots and another person being treated for blockages in the pulmonary arteries.

Danish health authorities said there were deaths reported in the country but it could not be concluded whether there was a link between vaccines and blood clots.

Meanwhile, the European Medicines Agency said it was reviewing all incidents related to blood clots. "But preliminary reviews show no particular problem," he said.

As of Tuesday, drug regulators said 22 cases of blood clots had been reported among the three million people vaccinated against the AstraZeneca vaccine in the European Economic Area.

According to Brostrom, it needs time to clarify this case before using the AstraZeneca vaccine again. That means that people who have received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine in Denmark must wait before they receive the second dose.

The Danish government on Thursday (11/3/2021) has suspended the injection of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine for two weeks after reports of cases of blood clot formation, including one death in Denmark.
"We and the Danish Drug Administration must respond to reports of possible serious side effects, from both Denmark and other European countries," said Danish Health Authority director Soren Brostrom in a statement .

"At the moment it is impossible to conclude whether there is a connection. We acted earlier, it needs to be thoroughly investigated," Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said on Twitter.

The Danish Drug Administration said it had launched a joint vaccine investigation with relevant agencies in other EU countries as well as the EMA.

"It is important to emphasize that we have not chosen not to use the AstraZeneca vaccine, but we will hold back," said Brostrom.

So far, 136,090 Danes have received AstraZeneca's vaccine shots in the country of 5.8 million people. The Nordic countries also use vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna

Previously, AstraZeneca vaccine discontinuation was also carried out in Austria. AstraZeneca itself said in a written statement that the safety of its vaccine has been studied extensively in human trials and peer-reviewed data has confirmed that the vaccine is generally well tolerated.

The drugmaker said earlier this week its injections were subject to stringent and stringent quality controls and that there had been no "confirmed serious adverse events related to the vaccine". He also said he had been in contact with Austrian authorities and would fully support their investigation.

As a result of this, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Latvia also stopped inoculation of the British company's vaccine.

The AstraZeneca vaccine itself is also obtained by Indonesia. Indonesia itself has received 1.1 million doses of the vaccine through the COVAX scheme from the World Health Organization or WHO.

Denmark has decided not to get the AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine . The temporary suspension of use of the British-made vaccine will be in effect for the next two weeks.

As quoted by Reuters on Thursday (11/3/2021), the Danish authorities temporarily stopped using AstraZeneca after there were reports that the vaccine recipient had serious blood clots.

The Danish authorities reported that one of the cases of AstraZeneca vaccine recipients had died due to blood clots.

"We and the Danish pharmaceutical agency should respond to reports of possible serious AstraZeneca side effects from both Denmark and other European countries," said Director of the Danish Health Authority Soren Brostrom.

Soren did not disclose the number of reported cases of blood clots in the AstraZeneca vaccine recipients in Denmark.

So far, 136,090 people out of a total of 5.8 million Danes have received the AstraZeneca vaccine injection.

Apart from AstraZeneca, the Nordic country also uses vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

At present it is not possible to conclude whether there is a link between coagulation and the AstraZeneca vaccine. We acted earlier, it needs to be thoroughly investigated, "said Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke.

The same was the case in Austria

Before Denmark suspended the use of AstraZeneca, Austrian authorities first implemented the same policy because there were cases of death due to coagulation disorders or blood clots.

Austrian authorities temporarily stopped using AstraZeneca after there was a case of death for the vaccine recipient due to coagulation.

AstraZeneca, on the same day, told Reuters in a written statement that the safety of its vaccine had been studied extensively in human trials.

Meanwhile, through data collection, AstraZeneca claims that the excess of their covid-19 vaccine is generally well tolerated.

AstraZeneca also claimed earlier this week that there were no reports of serious adverse events after humans were injected with the vaccine.

European Union drug regulator, European Medicines Agency (EMA), Wednesday (10/3), asserted that so far there is no evidence linking AstraZeneca with two cases of blood clots in Austria.

The EMA in a written statement states that the incidence of  thromboembolism, or moving blood clots, in people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine is not higher than that seen in the general population.

Meanwhile, regarding the blood clotting case in Denmark, EMA was not yet willing to be asked for a response by  Reuters.

Quoted by Suara.com from France24.com , Denmark added to the long list of European countries that have suspended the use of AstraZeneca because of the excess vaccine.

Apart from Denmark and Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg also suspended AstraZeneca use due to blood clotting cases.
