At the same time, it’s not easy to overcome the triggers of rural America either, where Trump signs (even though it’s time to take them down now) and confederate flags perpetuate the message that people like me don’t matter. Also, oftentimes, being in an interracial relationship means being introduced to environments from your partner’s background, and for me, being in predominantly white (American) environments is something I will have to continue navigating comfort in. However, I see that this process is completely internal, in that it comes from reframing the mental narrative that my differences make me “not enough,” to that they make me who I am.
If 2020 could be labeled as anything, I would call it the brink of a new age and a reformation of thought. For Americans, our country has become polarized beyond recognition with convenient truths rather than an educated, objective embrace of absolute truths. Science, although committed to achieving a better understanding of the physical world, has been dismissed by many as “pseudoscience” as individuals with power continue exploiting ecological processes in the name of a “good economy.” Over the past twenty years, we have experienced how technology, especially social media, has guided us down two disparate paths

: one into a dark hole filled with the suffocating smog of fake news, conspiracy theories, spite towards beliefs that differ from our own, and a general global pessimism. On the other hand, it connects our global community, decoding more history and mysteries of our physical universe, fundamentally creating a movement to improve the quality of all life on this delicate planet. This is the time to challenge systems that were perversely set in place, and thus, have a better understanding of our planet, our species, our culture, and ourselves. For me, this year has been one of deep, dark, intense reflection, and through it all, forgiveness has been my guiding light.
Forgiveness is not just a pill you swallow one day, however, and then your resentment is cured. It’s an active, conscious process. It’s a choice. It’s a choice not to fester in bitterness, let your past distort the beauty of your present, and judge or dismiss groups of people because of that. I am learning to forgive the people who made me feel less than, and furthermore, have compassion for myself for allowing them to. I am also learning to forgive those who don’t understand me or my beliefs, neither wish to. There’s power is agreeing to disagree.
