Breakup Advice For Guys - 9 Tips For Dumping Her and Remaining a Gentleman

As so often happens, the relationship you are in is no longer satisfying and you know it's time to call it quits. You are planning to dump your girlfriend but you want to do so in a gentlemanly manner. No matter how hard you try to soften the breakup it may still be difficult for her to accept. Here is some breakup advice for guys that hopefully will make the task easier:

1- Prepare her for the breakup- Prior to the actual breakup drop hints that you are no longer satisfied with the relationship. Reduce the amount of time you spend with her. Also, cut back on what you spend on her. For example, if you buy her an expensive piece of jewelry just before you breakup she won't know what to think.

2- Tell her before you tell anyone else- Be sure that she is the first, and I do mean the very first, to know that you are breaking up with her. If she learns from friends, whether hers or yours, that you're ready to move on, you will have an enemy for life. If you still have feelings for her but are no longer in-love with her, tell her. She deserves your honesty and you will be dumping her and remaining a gentleman.

3- Break up in a neutral place- Wherever you choose to dump her, be sure it isn't her home. She doesn't deserve having to be exactly where the breakup occurred every day.

4- Break up in person- Breaking up any way except in person would in no way help you remain a gentleman. Text messaging is a great way to communicate a lot of the time-this is not one of them. Regardless of how you dread facing her with this news, you owe it to her to tell her in person that the relationship is over. You aren't required to see her again after the breakup, but you do owe her the courtesy of doing it in person.

5- Keep it simple-Be very direct and tell her that you don't want to see her anymore. Don't complicate things by trying to relive the entire relationship at this time. Be prepared to answer the "why now" question because she will most likely ask it.

6- Let her know what's going on with you-If you can let her see your perspective on the relationship she is more likely to be able to better cope with the breakup later.

7- Make a clean break-If you are ready to leave-leave. She may try to get you to reconsider either at the breakup or later. She may do this though e-mails, phone calls, text messages or in person. If you are sure the relationship is over, getting back together is not going to work over the long haul. There's a reason you want to break up, stick with your decision.

8- Time it right-There's never a perfect time to dump someone, but there are times that are worse than others. For example if you dump her just before a major holiday like Christmas or Valentine's Day, it may seem that you just didn't want to buy a gift. Be sensitive to what is going on in her life at a particular time. Don't breakup with her the week before exams, or when you know she is in the middle of a big project at work, or if she's going through a major medical ordeal with a close family member. If necessary, take a deep breath and stay with her a little longer.

9- Be prepared for tears-She's going to cry and you know she's going to cry. Have a handkerchief or tissues ready. Let her cry, but don't get too emotional yourself.
