Bruins notebook: David Pastrnak ends goal-scoring slump to spark Boston offense

BOSTON — Initially it looked like David Pastrnak had broken his scoring slump in the second period when his shot through traffic on the power play eluded Ilya Samsonov to break a scoreless tie.

But the goal which was initially credited to him was changed to Brad Marchand, who tipped it through helping to open the floodgates in the 4-1 win.

But Pastrnak, who had no playoff goals and had scored just once in the month of May, ended his drought on the power play, 29 seconds into the third period.

“It was obviously nice to score a goal, but the important part is that we’re winning,” said Pastrnak, who had 20 goals in 48 regular-season games. “In the playoffs, it doesn’t really matter as long as you get the win.”

Bruce Cassidy said Pastrnak has continued to put himself in position to score.

“He’s worked hard. He’s gotten himself in position to shoot the puck. I think he played well the other night. He had 16 or 18 attempts. ... The puck just didn’t go in for him,” Cassidy said. “Maybe this gets him feeling better about his shot. He’s still making plays, working hard. ... There’s some doubt sometimes. When am I going to get my next one? I think that goes through scorers’ heads. But I didn’t see any frustration with Pasta. He just stuck with it and got rewarded.”

Pastrnak said his approach to breaking a slump wasn’t complicated.

“I just tried to keep shooting. Last game I had lots of good opportunities to score. Sometimes the goalie makes a great save or I rushed it a little bit,” he said. “It’s always a good sign when you’re getting a lot of chances, but sometimes it’s frustrating when it doesn’t go in. But I’m going to stay with it. My main focus is to keep getting shots on net.”

TUUKKA RASK BREAKS BRUINS RECORD — With the win, Tuukka Rask now has 54 postseason victories, making him the franchise’s career leader in the category. Rask is 54-43 all-time in playoff games.

He came into the game tied with Gerry Cheevers, who was 53-34 in 12 seasons.

FIRST TWO-GOAL LEAD — Pastrnak’s goal less than a minute into the third period marked the first time all series that either team led by more than a goal. Charlie Coyle’s goal less than a minute later marked the first time either side scored three consecutive goals in a game. This snapped a streak of five postseason games between Boston and Washington that had gone to overtime and 12 that were decided by one goal.

McMINUTES — With Kevan Miller out, Charlie McAvoy’s already big minutes jumped up further as he played 26:18, including 4:38 on the power play and 8:49 shorthanded. Those are numbers comparable to those his former defensive partner Zdeno Chara used to play in his Boston prime. Now on Washington’s third D pair, Chara played 14:11.

Boston Bruins turn anger into offense, crush Washington Capitals 4-1 to seize control of series
BOSTON — When Tom Wilson’s cheap shot knocked Brandon Carlo out of the March 5 game between the Bruins and Capitals, Boston channeled the resulting anger into an offensive onslaught and won in a rout.

After Dmitry Orlov left his feet to deliver a hit that knocked the Kevan Miller out of the game Friday, the Bruins once again put their fury into the back of the net. They scored three straight goals and rolled to a 4-1 win over the Capitals at TD Garden.

Boston leads the best-of-seven series, 3-1 and can close it out Sunday at 7 p.m. in Washington.

After Orlov’s hit, Miller crumpled to the ice and immediately went to the Boston dressing room after getting up. Charlie Coyle, who witnessed the hit, immediately jumped on Orlov and the two wrestled on the ice. Orlov was given a 4-minute double minor for roughing and Coyle just two.

Kevan Miller injury: Boston Bruins defenseman sent to hospital after sustaining hit to the head
The Bruins fans and Bruce Cassidy wanted a major penalty on Orlov. But Brad Marchand tipped David Pastrnak’s shot past Samsonov, 20 seconds into the ensuing power play to give Boston a 1-0 lead with 12:00 left.

Pastrnak gave the Bruins the first two-goal lead by either team, 29 seconds into the third period and 34 seconds later Coyle made it 3-0.

But just when it looked like the Bruins might run away with an easy one, Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal with 15:06 left to make it 3-1.

Matt Grzelcyk scored on the power play with 5:10 left to put the lead back to three goals at 4-1.

Tuukka Rask made 19 saves, while Ilya Samsonov stopped 33 shots for Washington.

The Capitals had an opportunity to jump ahead early when the Bruins took two penalties in the first six minutes of the game, but Boston’s penalty kill was excellent and its ability to shut down Washington’s power play early — the Caps didn’t get a shot off on their second power play — seemed to energize the TD Garden crowd.

Washington started the same goalie for the second straight game for the first time in the series and Samsonov rewarded Peter Laviolette for that decision early. The Bruins dominated the second half of the first period, but Samsonov kept it scoreless. He got a little help from the post as Coyle rang the left post with 8 seconds left before intermission.

The Bruins got their own iron assistance when Wilson hit a pipe behind Rask, 1:40 into the second period.

Samsonov robbed Taylor Hall with just over 14 minutes left in the middle frame kicking aside a shot at the left post after Hall beat the defense entering the zone.

Rob Williams injury: Celtics big man leaves Play-In Tournament game, first-round playoff status uncertain
BOSTON — As Brad Stevens began to think ahead to the best-of-seven playoff matchup with the Brooklyn Nets that will start this weekend, he was certainly hoping Rob Williams could be part of his game plan.

“We’ve said all year that our only chance was to get healthy at the right time. We’re not because Jaylen (Brown) is obviously out,” Stevens said. “But if we can get Rob back and a good couple days of prep. It’ll be a fun challenge to go up against the best.”

Williams’ availability figured to be a constant question mark for the rest of the season even before the Play-In Tournament tipped off Tuesday. Williams has been dealing with turf toe. Stevens speculated that the injury liked would make Williams a game-time decision for any games that remained for the Celtics this season.

But he was cleared to play before the game and Stevens put him in the starting lineup. He was energetic and effective early with four points and four rebounds in 8 first-quarter minutes. But late in the second quarter, he leaped to block a shot and his right foot landed awkwardly on Jayson Tatum’s foot. To keep from crashing landing, his injured left foot planted hard putting pressure on the front of his foot as his injured toe absorbed considerable weight.
He stayed down for a few moments and when the clock stopped with 40.6 seconds left in the half, he hobbled to the locker room.

At first, it looked like the Celtics had dodged a bullet when Williams came out to start the third quarter But 1:11 into the second half, he asked out of the game and didn’t return.

“Rob hyperextended that toe. He felt it pretty good,” Stevens said. “He tried to get back and play. He’ll just get treatment and see what happens. It’s not enjoyable.”

The value of Boston’s 118-100 win increases because it means the Celtics don’t have to play Thursday, giving Williams additional rest and healing time.

Williams is averaging 8.0 points and 6.9 rebounds and a team-high 1.8 blocked shots per game, averages that have continued to rise since he became the starter.

Kevan Miller injury: Boston Bruins defenseman sent to hospital after sustaining high hit

BOSTON — Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller was knocked out of Game 5 of the first-round series between Boston and Washington and sent to the hospital after being hit in the head.

The Bruins tweeted:

“UPDATE: Kevan Miller will not return. He was transported to the hospital for scans and further evaluation.”

With 12:20 left in the second period, Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov left his feet to challenge Miller near the blue line and hit him high. Miller crumpled to the ice and immediately went to the Boston dressing room after getting up.

Charlie Coyle, who witnessed the hit, immediately jumped on Orlov and the two wrestled on the ice. Orlov was given a 4-minute double minor for roughing and Coyle just two.

The Bruins fans and Bruce Cassidy wanted a major on Orlov. But David Pastrnak scored 20 seconds into the ensuing power play to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

Miller had played 8:30 before the injury.

Against the big and physical Capitals, the Bruins are missing Miller and Jeremy Lauzon, their two most physical defensemen and regular penalty killers. Lauzon was been out since Game 1. The Bruins will finish the game with just five blue-liners.

The play increased the already high level of acrimony between the two teams. A hit by Capitals forward Tom Wilson earlier in the season sent Brandon Carlo to the hospital and caused him to miss almost a month of action. Wilson was suspended five games for the play.

Jarred Tinordi is Boston’s most likely replacement for Game 5.
